Charges upgraded in fatal Nov. 21 accident

Police booked the driver of one of the cars in an accident that left a Lafayette woman dead last month with vehicular homicide, Lafayette police said.

Fred Dutton Jr., 23, of Lafayette, had already been booked with DWI and failure to obey a traffic signal in the Nov. 21 accident that killed Rachael Sonnier, 22, of Lafayette.

The additional vehicular homicide count was added Tuesday, police said.

Police said Sonnier was turning her car left onto Kaliste Saloom Road at 11:42 p.m. when it collided with a car driven by Dutton.

4 charged in stolen business checks

Investigators recovered $155,000 in stolen business checks when they arrested four men accused of using counterfeit checks in the Lafayette area, Lafayette police Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

Orlando Washington, 28; Kwame Cunningham, 22; Lavar Kittelberger, 32; and Anthown Swan, 27, all of Georgia, were arrested on 29 counts of bank fraud, 29 counts of forgery, 43 counts of conspiracy to commit identity theft and one count of identity theft, Mouton said.

Lafayette police received several reports of counterfeit checks in September, October and November, and during the course of an investigation discovered similar checks were negotiated in Calcasieu Parish.

A task force involving the U.S. Secret Service, the Lafayette Police Department and Louisiana State Police led to the men’s identification and arrest, Mouton said.

When officers searched a local hotel room where the men were staying, they recovered $155,000 in stolen business checks, $18,000 in cash and $2,500 in equipment, Mouton said.

“Investigators also arrested several men who were recruited locally by the suspects to cash the counterfeit checks,” he said.
