Police and fire briefs for Nov. 18

Suspect, 20, accused in attempted murder

A man accused of stealing $500 in gambling winnings was arrested Friday on five counts of attempted first-degree murder after shots were fired at a group of people, wounding one of them, an affidavit says.

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested Eric L. Russell, 20, 4530 Paige St., in the Nov. 9 shooting and robbery in the 5900 block of Atlanta Street.

Russell was one of three men who spoke on Atlanta Street to a group of five people, including the man who had won money earlier in the day, the affidavit says.

Russell and the other two men allegedly turned around and leveled handguns on the five people in the group, ordering them “to give it up,” the affidavit says.

One victim was told to take off his pants, and two of the victims ran away.

Russell and the others fired, the affidavit says, hitting one of the victims several times.

The victim is expected to survive.

The gunmen took the money from the man who had won it gambling, the affidavit says.

Deputies also booked Russell on counts of armed robbery, illegal use of a weapon and criminal damage to property.

Another man wanted in the case, Christopher Hymes, 19, 5637 Denova Drive, surrendered to police earlier in the week.

I don't even know where Shady's is, nor do I know anyone who was arrested there. I don't even drink, lol. DWI's have always been posted. These are people driving around with us, killing our mothers, fathers, sisters, and children. The name of a 20 year old drinking a beer in a bar is hardly the sort of thing that will be listed in the paper. The only reason it was even a story was because there were so many. They broke the law, and were arrested, I have no problem with that. I would also have no problem if they listed their name and picture. I just wonder why you are obsessed with knowing. I wonder why you think it is some sort of conspiracy that they aren't listed in the paper. Neither are speeding tickets, lol.

Jennifer, it is not an obsession of seeing the names of 20 people who "went in a bar" hundreds of people do that every night, it is the names of the people who were arrested for breaking the law. See the names of the 12 people in the above article that were arrested for DWI? Their names were in the paper along with their addresses for all the world to see why not be fair and either do none or do all. By the way were you or a family member arrested at Shadys?

"Took out handguns"--plural. Good grief. How many people "are packin'" in B.R.? Is that the vogue thing to do? And all for a lousy $500.

Why are you so obsessed with finding out the names of 20 year old people who went to a bar?? LOL. Like that never happens!! I don't care if they print the names, I just don't understand the obsession.
