Vehicle hits 2 students crossing road

Two Woodlawn Middle School students were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after they were struck by a vehicle before school started Thursday morning, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old who had walked to school were hit by a vehicle as they tried to cross Tiger Bend Road to go to a store.

The two were going to buy candy before school when they stepped into oncoming traffic, Hicks said.

One child has a broken leg and the other has abrasions, Hicks said.

Hicks said the driver
was not cited because the students stepped into oncoming traffic.

More than likely, the students tried to cross Tiger Bend to get to that Cracker Barrel at the corner of Tiger Bend and Antioch. They were probably walking to school (not at school and then left) and wanted to grab some candy on the way there. People drive like maniacs down that stretch of road. Hope the kids will be OK.

Why were they allowed to leave campus? Even though it was before school, they should not have been allowed to leave campus once they got off the bus or dropped off in carpool. And it goes without saying you shouldn't speed in school zone.

Drivers speed in these school zones too often!
