BR man shot and killed on Huron Street

A 27-year-old Baton Rouge man died hours after being shot in the chest and arm Friday outside an apartment complex on Huron Street, police said.

Police responding to a 3 a.m. call about gunshots near Sharon Arms Apartments at 2747 Huron St. found Bryan Young, 1815 Swan St., lying on the ground between two of the complex’s apartment buildings, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

Young was taken to a hospital, where he died, McKneely said.

Lonnie Claiborne said she and her family members were having a hard time accepting her brother’s death.

Young had spent much of Thursday at the family’s Swan Street home after Hurricane Isaac, she said, and the family still was in a state of denial that he actually was gone.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow,” Claiborne said, as she sat on her mother’s porch and reminisced about her brother with family members.

Claiborne described her brother as a magnetic personality who never met a stranger and didn’t have any enemies.

“He always had a smile on his face,” she said. “Always.”

The family was “bombarded” on Friday with phone calls and visits to the Swan Street residence from people who knew Young and were shocked at his death, Claiborne said.

Police didn’t immediately have a motive for the shooting or any suspects, McKneely said. Because Young didn’t have enemies, Claiborne said, his family members wondered if the shooting was a random hate crime.

“It’s hard for us because who in the world would want to do what they did?” Claiborne said. “He wasn’t the type of person who’s going to walk up to you and start a fight.”

She said she and her family are still trying to figure out exactly what happened that caused Young to be shot “seven or eight times.”

That is why i liked the 11 to 7 shift, was just a little bit easier to tell the good guys from the bad guys.

You don't need a curfew to tell you to be indoors at 3 a.m. A healthy dose of common sense will accomplish that task. There's always the possibility that he was out on legitimate business, but still, at that time of the morning in that part of town, it's a roll of the dice when you're on the streets---for whatever the reason.

Anytime you are out and about at 3:am in the morning, you are pushing your luck. I don't know if a curfew was in effect in BR, but its still best to keep off of the streets during the night.
