Pedestrian hit, killed in Livingston Parish

An Independence woman walking in a Livingston Parish intersection was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday night, according to a State Police news release.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on La. 442 west of La. 43 at the intersection of Stilley Road, the release says.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 43-year-old Melody Elkins, of Hammond, was traveling west on La. 442. The SUV struck 55-year-old Marilyn Garnett, who was walking in the roadway at La. 442 and Stilley Road.

Garnett was pronounced dead on the scene by officials with the Livingston Parish Coroner’s Office.

Troopers do not suspect alcohol to have been a factor in the crash. However, a sample of Garnett’s blood has been Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

Elkins voluntarily submitted a breath sample to troopers that showed she had no detectable alcohol in her system.

Bouncer, not that many details on the story here, but let's see it was 9PM so dark. It does say the pedestrian was walking in the roadway at an intersection and I am guessing she was not walking in the opposite flow of traffic like you should. And where does it say the driver didn't care? Looks to me like you're leaping to conclusions that simply aren't there based on the facts as reported.

What is it with some of these drivers? Do they just not care about their own safety and the safety of others? I see daily how careless and inattentive so many Louisiana drivers are, but I have never lived anyplace where so many pedestrians are hit and killed as there are in this area. If I hit and killed someone with my vehicle, I don't know if I could live with myself afterwards. That's got to be a sickening experience for anyone with a shred of a conscience.
