Atlanta Ave. shooting leaves two wounded
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a double shooting Monday on Atlanta Avenue near Greenwell Street.
Deputies were called at 3:54 p.m. about shots fired in the 5900 block of Atlanta Avenue, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.
Deputies believe two men shot each other, but the incident is still under investigation, Hicks said.
The men were taken to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Hicks said.
15 illegal immigrants nabbed in club raid
Authorities raided a Greenwell Springs Road club Saturday night and arrested 18 people, 15 of whom were illegal immigrants, police said Monday.
Police arrested two people at the Latin Club at 8144 Greenwell Springs Road and booked them into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, police spokesman Cpl. Tommy Stubbs said in a news release.
Victor Gardona Badoles, 29, was booked on one count of resisting an officer, and Leonidas Umana, 35, was booked on counts of public intoxication and resisting an officer, Stubbs said.
Police also issued Dariela Cantillano, 17, a misdemeanor summons for underage entry in an alcohol establishment, Stubbs said.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigators arrested 15 illegal immigrants who will be deported because of previous criminal histories, Stubbs said. Their identities and criminal histories were not released.
The state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control cited the bar for eight violations including allowing an underage person into the bar, Stubbs said.
The Fire Department and state Fire Marshal’s Office also cited the bar for various fire code violations, Stubbs said. The FBI also was involved in the investigation.
Fire damages home on Fairchild Street
No one was injured in a Monday afternoon fire at 2406 Fairchild St., according to the Fire Department.
Firefighters were called to the home just after 2 p.m. to find a back bedroom engulfed in flames, Fire Department spokesman Curt Monte said.
The fire spread to the attic before being brought under control just before 2:30 p.m., Monte said. The rest of the home was damaged by smoke and water, he said.
Five people were home at the time of the fire, which was sparked by an overloaded extension cord, Monte said. No one was injured, he said.
One DWI suspect booked into prison
Authorities arrested at least one person suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 2:30 p.m. Monday, booking records show.
Stephen Morton, 46, 11085 Chalice Drive, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one count each of first-offense DWI, failure to maintain control and reckless operation of a vehicle.
