LAFAYETTE — The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death Thursday afternoon of a 51-year-old inmate.
Deputies assigned to the facility discovered Lelia Shelvin hanging in her cell at 2:48 p.m. during a wellness check, Capt. Kip Judice, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release Friday.
Shelvin was being held on an outstanding warrant for aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon, Judice said.
She was booked into the jail at 1:16 a.m. Thursday, Judice said.
Shelvin’s death is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department, Judice said.
