Deputies arrested a man Wednesday morning accused of throwing a puppy over the fence of the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society animal shelter over the weekend, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Richard Hawn, 38, 3228 Toulon Drive, was booked early Wednesday with cruelty to animals and with traffic warrants.

An anonymous caller contacted the Sheriff’s Office Tuesday night and told deputies the man’s name and location, according to the Sheriff’s Office release. The caller had seen the report on the news.

The hound mix puppy, called “Jimmy” by shelter workers, seems to be in good condition following the incident, Glenda Parks, a board member with the society, has said.

Parks said Wednesday morning that a visit with a veterinarian has been scheduled for Thursday and pending the results, Jimmy will be available for adoption Saturday at the Quinn Drive shelter from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Parks said shelter volunteers have already fielded many phone calls and requests from folks who want to adopt Jimmy.

“Every time there is a story, people line up to adopt,” Parks said.

“We are going to make sure to find Jimmy a good home,” Parks said.

He can't be all bad. At least he took the dog to the shelter. How he delivered it is pretty terrible, I'll grant you, but at least he didn't just abandon it in the woods.

Whoever identified this parasite, thank you. You are a person with a heart and a conscience who recognizes cruelty. This little dog did not choose Richard Hawn, he chose Jimmy. I can only imagine what Jimmy's life was like with someone who would be so cold and cruel to hurl his little body over the fence of a shelter and drive away. I can only imagine how confused and scared he was. Richard Hawn is despicable. I hope his family is ashamed. I hope his community shuns him. If he is employed, I hope he is fired. At Hawn's age, he should know the difference between right and wrong, He should have an understanding of obligation and responsibility.

Jail is too good for this scum. I say we drop him in a pack of pit bulls and let them hump him to death.

Just another upstanding citizen. He had warrants for his arrest already. Can't we just go throw his off the bluffs or something like what he did to that dog? An eye for an eye is great punishment.
