Police: Teenager dead in accidental shooting
A 14-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself Monday at his King Bradford Drive home, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to 3243 King Bradford at 3:30 p.m. in regards to the teen being shot, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said Tuesday. The boy, Devaronte Carter, had already been taken to a hospital when deputies arrived, she said.
Carter was pronounced dead at the hospital, Hicks said.
Although the investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, Hicks said, “all evidence at this time indicates this was an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Man accused in attack of former girlfriend
East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies Tuesday arrested a man accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend while she was working June 20, an arrest warrant says.
Walter Allen, 46, is accused of going to his ex-girlfriend’s workplace, the Family Dollar, 12190 Plank Road, at 8:30 a.m. and assaulting her, the warrant says.
Allen pulled the woman into a stockroom and held her there against her will while customers shopped in the store, the warrant says.
Allen then grabbed the woman by the neck, threw her down to the ground and wrestled her cellphone out of her pocket, the warrant says.
Allen bit the woman on her left forearm during the fight, the warrant says. He fled after his former girlfriend threatened to yell for her manager, the warrant says.
Allen was booked into Parish Prison on one count each of domestic abuse battery, false imprisonment, simple robbery and unauthorized entry of a business.
Pot blamed for blaze at Gardere apartment
A pot left on a stove caused a Monday night fire at a Gardere Lane apartment, according to the St. George Fire Protection District.
Firefighters were called to 2364 Gardere Lane, Apt. A, just after 11 p.m. to find the apartment’s kitchen engulfed in flames, Fire District spokesman Eldon Ledoux said.
The fire spread to the dining and living rooms before being put out, Ledoux said.
The entire apartment received severe heat and smoke damage, and the three surrounding apartments received mild smoke and water damage, Ledoux said.
Authorities book 2
on suspicion of DWI
Authorities arrested at least two people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Monday and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, booking records show.
Those booked and the counts against them:
- James Mills, 44, 114 Charter Ridge Court, first-offense DWI, improper lane usage and reckless operation of a vehicle.
- Kathryn Smith, 19, 14225 Woodland Ridge, first-offense DWI, reckless operation of a vehicle and opening/closing vehicle door.
