East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a 21-year-old man Monday in the fatal shooting a 19-year-old man Friday night on Elvin Drive.
Quinton Edwards Davis, 1722 General Cleburne Ave., will be booked into Parish Prison on one count each of second-degree murder and illegal use of a firearm, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said in a news release.
Malcolm Fitzgerald Johnson, 8736 Elvin Drive, was shot at 944 Elvin Drive at 11:15 p.m. Friday, Hicks has said. Johnson was taken to a hospital, where he later died, authorities have said.
Prior to the shooting, Johnson was on his way home when he stopped to talk to a group of people walking on Elvin Drive, Hicks said Monday.
Johnson got into an argument with Davis, who pulled out a gun and shot Johnson multiple times, Hicks said.
Detectives obtained surveillance video footage from a nearby convenience store that showed several people fleeing the scene following the shooting, Hicks said. Detectives identified one of the people as Davis, she said.
Davis said he argued with Johnson after Johnson spoke to his brother’s girlfriend, Hicks said.
Davis told detectives Johnson left the scene but returned later to try to rob him, Hicks said. Davis said Johnson pointed a handgun at him, which led him to shoot Johnson, Hicks said.
Other witnesses did not corroborate Davis’ statement, Hicks said.
