Shots fired during drug sting

An Assumption Parish narcotics detective fired three shots at a man who almost hit him with his car during an attempted escape from a drug sting, the Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.

The man who was driving the car, Russell L. Prean, 30, 220-A Freetown Lane, Belle Rose, was arrested on counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated flight from an officer and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, deputies said Thursday.

Deputies converged on Prean Tuesday evening after he stopped at a predetermined location along La. 308 in Belle Rose under the belief he was to deliver crack cocaine to a buyer, deputies said.

Prean remained in his car as detectives tried to block him, deputies said. Prean then attempted to drive away, first backing up then driving forward toward the detective, deputies said.

Two of the three shots from the detective’s gun hit Prean’s white 1995 Mercury, deputies said.

The detective got out of the way of Prean’s car, deputies said.

Prean was later captured behind a house on Freetown Lane after he fled on foot through a cane field, deputies said.

Detectives found cocaine, crack cocaine, $220 and other personal items on Prean, deputies said.

Neither the detective nor Prean was injured, deputies said.

Prean remained in the Assumption Parish Detention Center in Napoleonville Thursday awaiting bail to be set, deputies said.

Ever being around a crack head? I want them all locked up. Stop it at the source.

Speaking from absolutely no experience, I imagine it's pretty hard to shoot accurately when someone is shooting back at you. Like Gene Hackman said in Unforgiven, "That'll just flat rattle some folks."

it would have helped with the problem if the detective could hit what he is shooting.

You just proved my point. Violent druggies are violent because the war on drugs keeps prices (demand) high. People involved in the drug business can't resolve disputes with business strategy or litigation; they use violence and intimidation. Maybe it's you who doesn't read the papers?

Well DMJ it sure beats the alternative, maybe you haven't read the papers lately and seen the violence perpetrated by druggies...

Yes, let's keep fighting the war on drugs. I'm sure we'll have it won any day now...
