BRPD: Man shot in the back, killed
Police are investigating a Tuesday night slaying in the 900 block of North 31st Street, a police spokesman said.
Jeremy McKenzie, of 12205 La Margie Ave., died at a local hospital after he was shot in the back at about 10 p.m. on North 31st Street near Gracie Street, Cpl. Thomas Stubbs said.
No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named, Stubbs said. A motive for the shooting also has not been determined.
McKenzie’s mother, Jessie McKenzie, said she broke down in tears when detectives told her about the death of her 23-year-old son.
“I was surprised,” she said. “And, I was so upset.”
Jessie McKenzie described Jeremy McKenzie as a happy, good, strong man who was about to become the father of twins.
Although he didn’t graduate from high school, she said he was always working or looking for a job.
Jessie McKenzie said the last time she talked to her son was a day and a half ago and the conversation was about him going downtown to apply for a job.
She said she doesn’t know why he was shot or who killed him.
“He didn’t have any enemies,” Jessie McKenzie said.
“He was a child of God,” she added. “What happened to him was awful, but he’s in heaven now.”
Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to call police at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
