Interstate 10 westbound lanes just east of Jennings in Jefferson Davis Parish have reopened following an early morning single vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler tanker carrying benzene, a flammable and toxic liquid, State Police said.
Eastbound lanes remained closed as of 5:45 p.m., according to State Police.
The crash occurred about 5 a.m. when a truck driven by 28-year-old Hector Martinez of Channelview, Texas, drove into the median and overturned, State Police spokesman Sgt. James Anderson said in an email Tuesday afternoon.
Martinez was not wearing a seat belt and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, Anderson said.
Troopers suspect Martinez may have fallen asleep while driving, although the crash remains under investigation, Anderson said.
Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto U.S. 165 north to U.S. 190 east to La. 13 south to I-10 east in Crowley.
Westbound traffic lanes were reopened at about 5:45 p.m.
It is currently unknown when the eastbound lanes on I-10 will be reopened. No evacuations have been required and none are expected, Anderson said.
