Assistant principal booked with battery

LAFAYETTE — Authorities have arrested the assistant principal of J.W.Faulk Elementary School after the woman allegedly struck her 20-year-old daughter with a broomstick handle.

Vachella Jones, 41, was arrested Saturday on one count of aggravated battery, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Kip Judice said in a news release Monday.

Deputies found bruising and swelling on Jarrell Burrle’s left arm and noted that the broomstick handle had been damaged during a fight, Judice said.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Kentucky Lane, Judice said.

“The disturbance was initiated because Jones accused Burrle of not keeping the house clean,” Judice said.

Jones was booked into the parish Correctional Center and later released after posting a $2,500 bail, Judice said

Jane Kearly, director of human resources for the parish school system, said Jones has been employed by the district since 2001. She has been the assistant principal at Faulk since 2005.

Kearly said district policy states that Jones shall be placed on suspension with pay pending the outcome of the investigation into her arrest.
