Woman killed after vehicle hits bridge

A 20-year-old Geismar woman was killed Thursday morning after her vehicle struck the bridge of a drainage canal on Interstate 10 in Ascension Parish, according to a State Police news release.

The crash occurred on I-10 near the Bluff Road overpass shortly after 3 a.m., the release says.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Amanda Walton was driving a 2004 GMC Denali east on I-10 when she began traveling toward the median, the release says.

Walton overcorrected, crossed over both eastbound lanes, and struck the bridge, according to the release.

The vehicle then began to roll and Walton was ejected. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, the release says.

Walton’s passenger, Dwyne Guitreau, 25, of Greenwell Springs, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, the release says.

Troopers suspect alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and have submitted a sample of Walton’s blood to the State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.
