Buddy Roemer, is recovering nicely from a stroke, and we wish him well. Roemer’s son, Chas Roemer — an elected member of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education — reported at the Press Club of Baton Rouge that Roemer is back at work and continuing therapy for the lingering effects of a small stroke. Buddy Roemer was governor from 1988 to 1992 and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1988. And we think he’ll forgive us for saying he was a troublemaker in both places. He showed up in the House and voted against his party’s leader for speaker, a rare occurrence. And then as governor he rescued state government from the disastrous third term of Gov. Edwin Edwards. Among other things, he antagonized Louisiana’s oil and gas industry by actually enforcing anti-pollution laws on the books. Imagine that. We think Roemer, at 70, has some troublemaking ahead of him, and we are happy for that.
