Letters: All New Orleanians should oppose crime

New Orleans’ former mayor, Ray Nagin, got a 10-year love this week, for which I hope he’ll be eternally grateful, considering 20 or more years was the maximum penalty.

This shouldn’t be spun into a moratorium on the fitness of black mayors as a political class, nor fodder for excuse-makers regarding black criminals.

This was the result of his actions alone, and while he and his family lost this week, the city also suffered another loss to her reputation. Let’s use this moment as a springboard to revisit lost unity against daily violent crime in our midst!

Safety is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian civil right that we are much better served pursuing, as opposed to bickering over this case.
