Letter: Children should not be referred to as ‘kids’

This may seem like a very trivial issue given the serious problems facing our country, state and city, but it has become a pet peeve with me.

Television newscasters, radio announcers and newspaper journalists insist on referring to our children as “kids.” Kids are baby goats and little jokes. Our children are neither.

I know it has become acceptable slang by the public, but shouldn’t we expect better from media professionals? These professionals do not refer to a wife as an “old lady,” a husband as an “old man” and women as “babes,” “honeys” or “broads.” If they did, they would no longer have a job.

The word “kid” has become a lazy word for lazy people who will not take the additional time and effort to come up with a better word when referring to our children. We and our children deserve better.
