Letter: Politicians expanding debt

Mary Landrieu’s latest television ad featuring her father testing her commitment to spending on a host of social programs is emblematic of everything that is wrong with politics. Landrieu is for spending on everything, of course, and implies that her opponent is not. In truth, every politician understands that his or her job is dependent upon bringing home the bacon. With federal debt exceeding $17 trillion, no one seems to care that future generations will bear the brunt of that burden. The unborn don’t vote and whatever spending priorities they might have don’t matter.

In their quest for votes, politicians have ignored Thomas Jefferson’s admonition that every generation must pay its own debts. Instead, our politicians placate us by spending now and condemning our offspring to penury. That’s quite a legacy.
