Our Views: The heroes of June 4

The communist government of mainland China wants to suppress it, but we hope people around the world will honor the memory of the students killed in the pro-democracy protest in Tiananmen Square.

That historic protest 25 years ago on June 4 continues to make the Chinese government nervous. The Guardian newspaper reported that a well-known human rights lawyer, Pu Zhiqiang, who was a graduate student participating in the Tiananmen events, has been detained. Arrest without trial is a common tactic of the Chinese government.

The more attention paid to these abuses abroad, the better. Americans in particular continue to value the democratic instincts of the Chinese young people who perished in the military crackdown in Beijing.
