Letter: Plans for airport could spur growth

The construction of a new terminal for the Louis Armstrong International Airport is yet another major step toward turning our airport from an Achilles heel into a catalyst for progressive economic development.

The lack of a first-class airport facility and past poor management promoted an inability to operate in a cost-effective manner thus driving away airlines and flights that are so necessary for an attractive business destination. Operational reforms implemented by Mayor Landrieu, the current airport board and Director of Aviation Iftikhar Ahmad over the past several years, along with this new construction, will finally place our airport in a position to attract more airlines and direct flights, including international flights. It will now become an attractive and highly functional access point that creates an immediate positive impression.

The announcement that the new terminal will become a reality, considered in light of operational reforms, creates a bright future for the facility that carries over into enhanced economic development activity in our region.
