Our Views: Bound for the Outback

Congratulations to the LSU Tigers, headed for one of football’s leading bowls on the New Year’s Day schedule.

The Tigers take the field against the 8-4 University of Iowa Hawkeyes, making their fourth appearance in the Outback Bowl from the Big Ten.

Call us prejudiced, but we rate the 9-3 Tigers as the favorite.

Even if star quarterback Zach Mettenberger is on the sidelines from his knee injury in the Arkansas victory, we have confidence in the power of LSU’s version of SEC football and the skills of backup Anthony Jennings. He demonstrated his talents in the game-winning drive against Arkansas.

Still, a significant bowl outing is a heckuva place for one’s first LSU start, and we wish him the very best in his big role.

Indeed, the Tigers deserve the attention and praise after some tough losses this year, caused in part because of the loss of so many veterans of 2012 to the pro ranks.

Happy New Year in Tampa, and the state of Louisiana remains proud and pleased with our Tigers.
