Letter: Jobs in balance as Congress fails to act

Unemployment is still above 7 percent, and a record number of Americans are being kicked out of the workforce. You would think Congress would do everything in its power to fuel our economy.

So why aren’t our representatives considering the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill? This legislation has enjoyed bipartisan support for over 20 years. It reduces duties on imported products that are unavailable in America but critical to our manufacturers.

Waiving these tariffs is essential to helping employers like mine, Syngenta. Without the MTB, our industry will face three quarters of a billion dollars in tax increases. Our facility in St. Gabriel employs nearly 700 Louisianians and the MTB helps us obtain the necessary inputs to finish products and continue to grow.

I urge Sens. Mary Landrieu and David Vitter to move forward on this legislation. American jobs are hanging in the balance.
