Shame on Jay Lapeyre and the other members of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority — East nominating committee who did not having the integrity to re-nominate John Barry. Mr. Barry and the other current members of the Flood Protection Authority are battling to save the Louisiana wetlands that are a critical line of defense against storm driven floodwaters. These committee members, on the other hand, are seemingly battling to protect the profits of the oil and gas industry.
They do so even as we see our flood insurance rates go up and face the daunting costs of maintaining the levee system around our cities and towns. The facts regarding the contribution of the oil and gas industry to the demise of our wetlands deserve to be aired in a court of law. These nominating committee members, by their votes, have chosen to short-circuit this process, and in so doing, drive another stake in the heart of the wetland restoration effort.
