Our Views: Haymon gets recognition Our Views: Haymon gets recognition Advocate story Nov. 01, 2013 Comments Writing under the colorful pen name of Lemony Snicket, Daniel Handler has written some delightfully creepy and subversive books for children, including a very popular sequence of novels known as “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Snicket is known the world over, so we were naturally delighted when he used a recent article in Poetry Magazine to give a shout-out to Louisiana’s poet laureate, Ava Leavell Haymon. Snicket was writing in praise of poems that aren’t written just for kids, but that youngsters might still enjoy. He selected Haymon’s “The Witch Has Told You a Story” as a good example of his subject. His recommendation of Haymon made us proud of our poet laureate, who lives and writes in Baton Rouge. Her poem is a fanciful take on “Hansel and Gretel.” You can read Snicket’s story, Haymon’s poem and his other poetry recommendations here: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/article/246328. We congratulate Haymon on her compliment from Snicket. It’s a nice reminder that people of talent, though separated by many miles, can still join hands as friends.
