The arrival of a long July Fourth holiday weekend will mean lots of swimming for many families throughout south Louisiana, and we hope that residents can enjoy that happy summer tradition without injury or death.
Unfortunately, drowning incidents are much too common at this time of year, which underscores the importance of some advice recently issued by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
DHH officials reminded families to have adult supervision on hand at all times when youngsters are in the water, and DHH urged swimmers of all ages not to swim alone. DHH officials also suggested that residents keep a phone near swimming pools for quick use in case of emergencies. The department’s caution that pools should be fenced is also worth heeding.
We wish everyone a good time in the water. And remember to get out of the pool if thunder looms.
