Our Views: Renew taxes for schools Our Views: Renew taxes for schools Advocate story April 29, 2013 Comments We urge Ascension Parish voters to renew three taxes on the May 4 ballot that provide important funding for the parish public school system. Early voting on the tax renewals is ongoing and concludes on Saturday. The biggest tax, a 21-mill parishwide property tax, is expected to generate $19.9 million annually that is dedicated toward teacher salaries. The second tax up for renewal is an 8-mill property tax dedicated to technology for classroom instruction and security. It is expected to generate about $7.6 million annually. The third tax up for renewal on the May 4 ballot is a 4-mill property tax that is expected to generate $3.8 million annually for school maintenance. The proposals are renewals of existing taxes, not new taxes. If approved, the taxes would be renewed for another 10 years. On a $150,000 house with homestead exemption, the combined 33-mill tax would cost homeowners approximately $247.50 per year. We hope that Ascension Parish voters renew these school taxes so that a growing, vibrant public school system can remain healthy and strong.
