Letter: Background checks already done

I keep reading and hearing over and over again about the need for background checks to buy a gun.

If the people who keep complaining would go to any local gun store and try to buy a gun they will find out that a background check will be performed. Even those of us who have a concealed-carry permit must have a background check.

So, check it out.

" it was another fool that brought up 'respect' which of course means respect through intimidation which isnt repsect at all" . WRONG ! I'm not asking for respect but giving it . I may not agree with your opinion but I respect your right to it . or having respect for powers we cannot control , such as a hurricane . knowing what it can do and being prepared for such . nothing to do with gangstas , intimidation or wanker size .

11) Comment by jedleland - 18/02/2013

atheist dribble? i thought more 'drivel' but you flatter me. most of the gun nuts here dont speak of target shooting or hunting or recreation but of paranoia and fear and government agents and all that malarkey. it was another fool that brought up 'respect' which of course means respect through intimidation which isnt repsect at all, just like the gangsta fools. most also pretend to be christian. they want guns to defend themselves (against their own fantasies) but jesus clearly said in matthew 5 dont resist evil, offer the other cheek, and all that. MLK and gandhi exercised peaceful resistance, just like jesus when he allegedly went to his cross. he didnt arm up and fire back and neither did the early christains in rome. thats why the atheist drivel. it seems to take one of us to remind the bible thumps of what they actually pretend to believe. but they like their guns much more than their god. present company excepted. by the way if theyre too hard to read, dont read em!

@Jedieland: Why do you always muddy up the conversation with your atheist dribble? Why would a Christian not need or just want a weapon? You'd be hard pressed to find many Christians that have that view point. Another thing, please proofread your posts. It's like deciphering the Da Vinci Code to read your posts sometimes. Also, I can give you a direct purpose for each gun I own, and none of them is fear. I have firearms for specific purposes, such as hunting and recreation. My camo Benelli isn't because I fear anyone; it's to lay down turkeys in the spring (and it's almost time!). My pistol isn't to go out slanging with the homies; I bought it because I shot a friend's, loved it, and went and bought my own. They're a lot of fun when treated with respect and handled properly. You should try it. I have rimfire (very small caliber) rifles and handguns that I use for rabbits and plinking around the house on the cheap. And I have many other guns on my "To Buy" list, none of which are intended to display my dominance and demand respect. I thought that was what bumper stickers were for....???

@teaslayer: "if it is stored properly, it wouldn't be stolen...hence negligence...BTW "stored properly" doesn't mean slid under your car seat" So if someone breaks into your padlocked house with an alarm set, runs in and steals your TV, should the homeowner be charged with negligence of mounting his TV? I know, apples to oranges comparing the theft of a TV to guns, but why are you still blaming innocent people for the actions of thieves? It's that liberal mentality that's rotting your cognitive abilities. Do you want to legislate that every gun owner should own a $2,000 safe to store all of their guns in? Well what if someone REALLY wants those guns and they break in, pry the safe open (even the BEST safes can be opened with time and pressure) and take all the weapons? Is that still negligence? Where do you draw that line?

14) Comment by Michael Gary Scott - 16/02/2013

The biggest advocate of background checks, Crazy Joe Biden would be unable to own a gun legally if mental health becomes a factor in gun purchases. Also the LA cop that murdered people in anger before becoming a crispy critter would have been able to purchase all the guns he wanted and passed the checks with flying colors. Restrictions on gun ownership only helps the criminal element, but since a member of that element resides on Pennsylvania Ave...

As for smart As who think they know whats best? Lets mot flatter ourselves eh? the only people who waste hours days and months of their lives on anonymous idiot boards like these are smart As who think they know best. doest matter what the topic its the same 2 dozen 'experts' opining every day and every one of them is pretty darn sure they know best every time, just like me. and for all the influence any of us have, it doesnt hurt to pretend were something other than the impotent online agitators we really are. all the best coaches are in the stands and those that cant do, teach i guess.

Cats? Geese? ***** You and every other aging gun nut has spent every opportunity the advocate allows since Newtown to publically fret over a govt disarming citizens and wounded knee and an unarmed populace are subjects not citizens and watch out for deadly home invaders and on and on and on. this is the first time coyotes have come up. are they federal coyotes? baloney. youve got your guns and now youre a man and take care of coyotes any way you want. but dont act like your geese are your big priority after you and every other advocate right wing regular has been beating the paranoia drum since newtown on these very pages every day. if you need a gun to be respected then youve got bigger problems than coyotes. noones comin for your guns gun nuts. so quit your fretting. but without the fretting over federal agents theres no need for the guns and thats a big crutch to throw away.

18) Comment by nimby? - 16/02/2013

tell ya what mr. know it all ; ther's a "gang" of wild dogs/coyotes roaming the area . they've gotten into my chicken coop , attacked one of my dogs , killed one of my cats and three geese . would you please come and talk with them , a bit of dialogue might help . it's not the criminals that are to worry over , but the clueless smart A's who think they know what is best for me , who wish to administrate the level of security in my own home . different people , different lives , wants , needs . glad you're happy in your manhood . suggest you find a mirror and amuse yourself ...

19) Comment by jedleland - 16/02/2013

Baloney the only reason to be armed is to instill fear and so be respected. gangsta fool is cared of other gangsta fools but they fear his deadly force so he thinks hes respected. Paranoid old men are scared of govt agents and have all the guns to instill fear in those gun-grabbin feds and so enjoy respect. Its respect based on instilling fear of your potency and supposed deadliness. all based on fear. if you need a gun to feel respected then your no better wiser or braver than the lowest corner gangland teenager. you earn respect you dont demand it with a juvenile show of force. build some self esteem gun nuts, man up, lose the fear and lose the guns. youll be a whole lot happier for it.

20) Comment by nimby? - 15/02/2013

he's not earning respect , he's inspiring fear , a difference .

21) Comment by jedleland - 15/02/2013

isnt that what every ghetto gangsta goon insists he requires and deserves, respect? and he's gonna earn it with his firepower. cause noone is going to tell him he aint a man! its the same story from urban teens to farmyard pawpaws since before our great great grandparents were born. guns equal manhood. all based on fear.

22) Comment by jedleland - 15/02/2013

dont recall suggesting you were - they were two different posts. nothing to do with respect its fear up down inside and out. man up to it, deal with it, and you'll be happier and less worried about the government for it. put away the fear and put away the guns.

23) Comment by nimby? - 15/02/2013

there's a difference between fear and respect . not a christian ...

24) Comment by jedleland - 15/02/2013

why does a christian need a weapon?

25) Comment by jedleland - 15/02/2013

most gun owners are just fearful people. scared of black people, the government, europeans, communists, the tri lateral commission, the gangta on the corner, yankees, or pick your poison. but fear is the common denominator. scared young men in the cities, scared old men in the sticks, scared moms in the burbs. if it takes a gun to make you feel like a man then have at it. the price is 10,000 deaths a year and a classroom full of dead children once in a while. a pittance. gun fetishists and men of low self esteem won this war decades ago. what the ehck are you still scared of?

DMJ , I have already submitted to such . I've been fingerprinted , documented . the government knows who I am , where I live . they know what weapon I own , their make , model and serial #s . they know I am certified to carry , and must maintain such . WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT ? the majority of owners in the U.S. do not belong to the NRA , they are not gun tottin' rednecks , right wing gun nuts or fox news zombies , and don't like being referred to as such . they are also parents , grandparents as well concerned with gun violence . they obey the law , secure their weapons , instruct their children in proper gun safety . yet will be most affected by any blanket legislation . best said that anti-gun advocates don't trust owners to keep weapons secure , and would prefer decide what is best . as DMJ has admitted he doesn't want anyone to own a weapon this is no skin off his nose .

28) Comment by DMJ - 15/02/2013

"same with gun control . those who respect/obey the law will bear the burden." Burden? Not having a 100-round clip is a burden? Passing a background check is a burden? You know who would find a background check a burden? Someone about to fail it.

29) Comment by nimby? - 15/02/2013

tea , my philosophy is that any gun left in a vehicle isn't secure , regardless . same can almost be said of the home . thieves can be very enterprising , and given time quite thorough . they will walk out the front door of a business carrying a TV in full view of a video camera . they will steal "secured" ATM machines . they will remove air condition units , steal the copper from the unit , then enter the dwelling and rob it . we cannot stop crime . but we can deter it thru excessive sentencing or make it more difficult , security systems , elec/barbed fences , dogs , guards , etc. same with gun control . those who respect/obey the law will bear the burden .

30) Comment by billynurse - 15/02/2013

I'm all for universal b.g. checks , as long as there are provisions that protect the law-abiding from being on watch lists to later be harassed . (i.e.- listed in newspapers). ...Mr LaPierre , and most of us see the slippery slope of government control...Registration CAN lead to confiscation , and tyranny DOES exist.

Corvette Racer, here you go... enjoy. http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/GAOREPORTS-GAO-02-653/html/GAOREPORTS-GAO-02-653.htm And how do I think they find out if a felon lied on his form? They don't find out. That's the problem.

32) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 15/02/2013

wherearewegoing, if it is stored properly, it wouldn't be stolen...hence negligence...BTW "stored properly" doesn't mean slid under your car seat

33) Comment by gary - 15/02/2013

@jdk944 - now that you have me straight on the background checks at gun shows - why did the leadership of the NRA flip on background checks? Mr. La Pierre was all from them in the late 90's and now is against them. Get me straight on that flipflop and you will have me toeing the righteous path.

34) Comment by Corvette Racer - 15/02/2013

@DMJ "And that all background check information is destroyed within 24 hours" Where did you get that info? 4473s are required to be kept by the store, I believe for a year, and can be examined at any time by ATF. How do you think they find out if a felon lied on his form?

35) Comment by nimby? - 15/02/2013

tea , not gonna argue with you . as has been stated over and over all guns at one time were legal . if a gun is stolen from a residence or vehicle it is the owners responsibility to report this , not the manufacturer . neither they nor the government can legislate responsibility . how do we force individuals to comply with registering private sales ? if something is sold for cash without documentation , gun , car , etc. there's usually a reason . not sure of the wording but isn't there a law in the state requiring the purchase of tax stamps for the sale of marijuana ? and how many dealers voluntarily submit to this ? how about a less lenient judicial system , mandatory sentencing for gun crimes , truth in sentencing , adult or juvenile . more for crimes committed with illegal weapons . the majority of crimes are committed with handguns by the same individuals , over and over . how about keeping them off the street , catch and release , slap on the wrist ain't workin ...

36) Comment by DMJ - 15/02/2013

This is great....except that 1/2 of all gun sales don't take place in a gun store. And speaking of background checks, did you know that gun stores are not required to report anyone who fails a background check? And that all background check information is destroyed within 24 hours? It's no wonder we can't track the sale of illegal guns. And nimby, where did that guy with the handgun on the street get his gun in the first place?

37) Comment by wherearewegoing - 15/02/2013

@teaslayer - "Gun owner negligence" is not the driving force behind stolen guns.....it's the criminals that take them in the first place. Stop criminalizing innocent people. I think gun owners should store their firearms properly, but if someone breaks into my home/vehicle and steals my guns, how can you blame me for it?

38) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 15/02/2013

so nimby, can you tell me where these "illegal" guns are manufactured? in the woods in gun labs with dangerous chemicals? or in a copper pot still? No?? So due to gun owner negligence, they were stolen -OR- through private sales they were purchased....that is how the criminals get the guns....but you never want to address that EVERY time someone rebuts your comments about criminals not following the law

39) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 15/02/2013

rgeraldwallace@cox.net, have you ever bought a gun from a private seller at a gun show? If so, did this private seller without an FFL do a background check on you?

40) Comment by nimby? - 15/02/2013

when a HANDGUN is sold on the street for cash chances are there's no serial # . neither the buyer nor seller are concerned with the law ...

41) Comment by rgeraldwallace@cox.net - 15/02/2013

Have any of you guys ever bought a gun at a gun show?

42) Comment by jdk944 - 15/02/2013

Mr. Oldham is not totally correct on his understanding of this matter BUT neither are the comments of @postscript and @gary. Do you own research on the internet, it only takes a few minutes to understand the issue!!

43) Comment by dday198 - 15/02/2013

personal sales. how do you know the person that wants to buy a gun from you is not Norman Bates?

44) Comment by postscript56 - 15/02/2013

It's background checks at gun shows, Jerry. This letter is a perfect example of what the problem is - folks like Jerry who don't wanna know the facts, just sure the illegitimate government is illegitimately trampling our rights.
