Letter: Advocate statement ‘out of the park’

The Advocate’s strong statements about the necessity for scrutiny regarding Mayor Kip Holden’s firing of Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White “hit it out of the park.”

Chief White, in fighting his firing at an upcoming appeal hearing, is following the courage of his convictions. That, in and of itself, is quite telling.

The paper is giving lip service. It and Baton Rouge radio and TV have always carried the water for the mayor, they see him as one of their own. He has been out of control long before firing the chief.

I agree with the letter, and perhaps the Mayor and others were thinking that the police chief would just silently disappear to another city without saying anything. Unfortunately for the Mayor, there are people in this town who actually still notice things that go on around them. I personally think that anyone who thinks that the firing of a police chief in a city this large should just go unnoticed by the news is not facing reality. The only embarrasement in this in my opinion is how this was handled by the administration from day one.

I agree the ADVOCATE has attempted to report this issue in a fair way, however, it should never have made the paper to begin with. This is the kind of thing that should have been resolved quietly and effectively and not tried in the press. These daily stories are, or should be, an embarrassment to all involved and the city.

A lot of folks outside the city of Baton Rouge worried about our mayor and chief.
