Letter: Some avowed Christians disregard teachings

As a Jew — and probably because of it — I have the greatest affection for Jesus Christ.

He practiced and taught the values that my religion holds dear today. In his world, 99 percent of the population lived in abject poverty, were never far away from death and were governed by uncaring and avaricious leaders. Realizing his limitations to improve and give dignity to their lives, he told them that things would be better in a life after death. His doctrine is best expressed in Matthew 24:45 where it is written: “Whatever you did not do to help the least of these brothers, you were refusing to help me.”

Though he professes to be deeply religious, this message seems absent from Gov. Bobby Jinal’s thinking and deeds. His 2013 budget is bereft of any sense of caring and mercy concerning an estimated 400,000 Louisiana residents who must turn to state government for their health care. For the sake of polishing his conservative bona fides for the 2016 Republican nomination, Jindal has refused to accept the many millions of dollars being offered by the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion.

While this — as many states — are struggling financially, Gov. Jindal has chosen to balance his budget by refusing to help our most vulnerable citizens. His deepest cuts are made to hospitals, doctors and other staff who care for the poor — including 400 employees at LSU’s public hospital — and to the Department of Children and Family Services. Other targets are mental health facilities (including services to children), victims of domestic violence and hospice patients. These cuts are especially cruel in Louisiana.

What ideology? The idea that the US is comprised of diverse groups like it or not and in a democracy, consensus and compromise defines a democracy? The lies appear to be by those who are promoting a distorted, warped view of the President's efforts. Propaganda is spread by groups who have made an affluent business of distorted claims and appeals to emotion which have nothing to do with Christian or conservative ideals and everything to do with making the propagandists and the well-connected a luxurious living. The most ludicrous claims are promoted as fact and embraced by those with latent fears, inbred bias and primitive tribal allegiances.

Scrooge, I pray for Obama everyday to do the right thing by our country. I don't hate the man, I just vehemently dislike his ideology and lies and I am not a Catholic. Merry Christmas to you all and I pray for God to Bless all of you on this joyous day!

I bet Whatnow and 8.6 are the types who leave mass after taking communion rather than properly waiting to the actual end of the mass and final prayer since by the time of communion they have amply demonstrated their Christianity by showing up.

Whatnow, are you more concerned and loving toward Obama? He is your fellow man. Or is it only those with whom you agree with?

christopher3: "By the way, Gov Jindal is Roman Catholic which is not Biblical Christianity any more than is Mormonism, Jehovah's witnesses, Scientology, Unitarianism, etc" By the time the last of the Gospels was written (The Gospel of John, around the end of the first century CE), Christianity was still a sect of Judaism. That was certainly the case when Paul was writing (the earliest of his letters was around 50 CE), as he had to deal with the controversy over whether a man had to be circumcised to to be baptized. So to be a "Biblical Christian," does that mean we have to become Jewish first, including subscribing to all the dietary laws and other restrictions?

christopherf3, John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He who believes on him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God" (John 3:14-18). Why should you judge any person or church who believes this in their hearts? That whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Catholics and Mormons, among other faiths, who follow these tenets as their core, are Christians.

well , see phil its like this: without health insurance you get to meet your maker quicker so a Christian shouldn't need health insurance. Medicare is tax supported health insurance. Pray you don' t lose it.

I can almost visualize Roman soldiers going house to house with swords drawn to collect taxes for health insurance during the time of the New Testament. I am not exactly sure how religion and health insurance fit together.

Mr. Rosenzweig illustrates a national failing: subjectivity in considering objective truths. In other words, focusing on personal religious beliefs and hopes rather than civic governance when you are considering civic governance.>>>>Jindal demonstrates for all Americans that voting for governance that uses theism to solicit you brings your ruin. In other words, if you let a smooth talker sell you your God, the consequences for you are nonetheless in the smooth talker's control: your God never steps in to fulfill your dreams.>>>>In other words, God is not as divided as the people's dreams, so all the smooth talker can do is fulfill his/her dreams.>>>>In other words, appealing to you on the basis of God is the first sign you are in the presence of a smooth talker. >>>>In other words, consider and understand the importance of separating state from church.

Christianity seems to create hypocrisy. Jindal is one of the most prominent examples.

can't seem to get it right today but I would like to know which church is the correct one according to the Bible so that I can make plans to avoid the fiery depths christopherf3 must have some information that is privy only to him since I cannot seem to find mention of any particular chosen Christian religion in the Bible. Certainly many people would like to know where this vitally important information came from, there has been no news of anyone in Louisiana finding lost scrolls in their backyard, why keep it a secret? It is contrary to "Biblical principles" to keep such information hidden.

17) Comment by Scrooge - 24/12/2012

redux; and which church might is the correct one according to "Biblical Christianity"?

18) Comment by Scrooge - 24/12/2012

christopherf3, so which is the one true Church? "As a born-again follower of Christ", would you mind posting the referenced verses in the words of Jesus to support your assertion of "Biblical principles" referring to appropriate roles of the "Church" and which church might be the correct one according to "Biblical hristianity"? (Note: The quotation marks in this comment are relevant and used according to a basic knowledge of English usage obtained in any college freshman or high school English class).

We are nothing but Jindal's stepping stone.

20) Comment by christopherf3 - 24/12/2012

8point is right. As a born-again follower of Christ, the Church has failed in this country. Never was it ever given over to government to take care of the weak. Biblical principals teach it is the role of the church to do these things. By the way, Gov Jindal is Roman Catholic which is not Biblical Christianity any more than is Mormonism, Jehovah's witnesses, Scientology, Unitarianism, etc.

Merry Christmas, mr. rosenzweig. You're not being very "tolerant" and "forgiving" of Governor Jindal. It's the "faith based" community that should be doing more to help our most vulnerable citizens.. After all, "Christians" are the ones tithing to their religious organizations to help the poor. May God bless us all on this eve of the birth of His Son, and all the rest of the days of our lives. And, yes, I include my "progressive" atheist friends in this prayer, also.

Your letter invoked memories of Reverend Raymond Jetson in his role as Representative Jetson years ago - He often advocated for "the least of these" in budget hearings. Governor Jindal is certainly not Santa Clause and he clearly picks and chooses among which of Jesus' teachings he follows. Thanks for this beautifully written letter and its sentiments.

27) Comment by Bighug - 24/12/2012

Many "Christians" are that in claim only. Certainly they don't follow his teachings. Most of the atheists I know are more concerned and loving of their fellow man than are those so-called Christians.
