Letter: America must return to God

In light of the recent tragedies of mass killings and an outcry for a solution, President Barack Obama has promised a swift resolution. This is not a new problem. It has been in the making for decades. The downward spiral of America began with the video game “Pong.”

Video games slowed the human interaction of our youth. The games have since gotten so violent with no value for human life that our young people have no true concept of life, death, pain, self-respect, pride or any of the values of the older generations and founders of this great country!

To further escalate the downward spiral the all-knowing powers that be said we couldn’t spank our kids, which gave them the power to revolt against the authority of their parents and the laws of man and God.

Next we took God and prayer out of the most-influential places our youth go, school and government buildings. Basically America told God “we don’t need you except in times of dire need like Sandy Hook School.” Tell me the staff and children followed the law and no prayers were sent up during the Dec. 14 attack.

Finally, we have the music of the past two generations. I don’t even know them all, but “death metal” and “rap” are the two most-damaging to our society. They have created cultures where the youth worship violence and gang warfare.

Government and Americans alike need to wake up and see guns are not the problem! Americans are the problem. This country gained its independence on Christian principles, Christian beliefs and Christian people! America has turned its back on one another and God.

We can’t undo 40 years of destructive behavior overnight, but we must start. America needs to get back to her roots, teach and allow parents to be parents, educators be educators. Throw political correctness out the window.

America is a Christian country. We will have God in our schools and all aspects of our lives. Parents interact with their kids, get them off the couch, out of their bedrooms and outdoors. Teach them to interact with each other in a positive manner. Teach them success and failure, pride and respect, love of God and country. Teach them to be positive and productive! Limit negative influence, whether it is in the form of electronic or human.

God bless America.

@1ryben it is my understanding the founding fathers of this great country by majority were Christian. As for video games they have been widely used as babysitters, instead of being interactive as you say they are in your home, kudos to you and the minority of Americans who do use them as learning tools. I play Wii sports with my grandchildren but there are none of the more violent games such as grand theft auto in my home. As for religion and the white house I am a Christian, so my preference would naturally be for a Christian President, but even if I were agnostic I would still prefer a Christian over a radical Muslim. Finally you say God(s) have no place in your home, it is buy the blood of many American soldiers you have the right to choose that and publicly state your beliefs. If you remove all religious comments from my letter and just take one thing away from my ramblings I would want that to be Parents need to be parents and teach, love and guide their children and not expect the village to do it for them. As you have led to believe happens in your home, again kudos to you.

I am told we have a christian president . not everyone has an equal voice in society , so it remains to the individual . you can't help a people but you can help a person .

I don't know why my comments are getting printed out of order. I'll try is again.>>>>>>>Anthony, Thanks for attempting to clarify some of our misunderstandings. I'm still confused though. What do you mean by the statement that "Christian people gained America's FREEDOM?" Video games are not to blame. That is just silly. My kid plays video games, with friends. It is no different than if they were playing checkers or any other game. Though likely to never happen, I welcome the day when the President's religion or lack thereof is a non issue. Lack of an influence of a god has NOT in any way led my children on a downward spiral. I'd challenge anyone to spend time with my kids and tell me they lack a sense of morality and right from wrong. God(s) have no place in my home.

Okay this is Anthony, wanting to help some folks understand my thoughts: First off I did not title this letter America must return to God. The moderators changed it from Fixing America one man’s thoughts. Second I never stated America was founded on the Christian religion I stated Christian people gained Americas FREEDOM. Third the downward spiral was from the lack of influence of God in the everyday lives of our children, the influx of violence from music and video game and finally the lack of human interaction of playing outdoors with one another. Nimby Yes we do need a Christian President, but I disagree with your comment about society, we as individuals do hold the responsibility of teaching, guiding and correcting our children, but America as a society has turned over the teaching, guidance, and correcting of our chidlren to the government. brcitizen, God Bless You. As for DMJ I will give you a break and make no further referance to you sir.

"So...let me get this straight... God, who is all-knowing and omniscient, sent the killer into that school to punish us because we supposedly took prayer out of schools? What a load. Guns are not to blame, but music and video games are?? The sad thing is....this guy really believes this garbage. If I was being ironic and trying to sound like a hypocritical, ignorant right-winger, I'd write a letter just like this one. Give me a break. " Thanks DMJ. I was going to comment, but I couldn't say it better.

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..." -Treaty of Tripoli (first treaty entered in to by the Unites States, ratified unanimously by the legislature). "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," - U.S. Constitution. Just because people wish America were a Christian nation, doesn't mean you can ignore our laws and history. We might be a nation in which most people are Christians, but we most certainly NOT a Christian Nation. If we were, we wouldn't have the death penalty or a offensive military. Think about it, and when you do....use your brain, not your heart or your gut.

It is delusional to claim America is not a Christian nation. The establishment of Christianity is in George Mason’s 1776 narrow definition of "religion": “[R]eligion, or the duty which we owe to our Creator and the manner of discharging it, can be directed by reason and conviction, not by force or violence; and therefore, all men are equally entitled to the free exercise of religion, according to the dictates of conscience; and . . . it is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity towards each other,” (from Article XVI of the Virginia Bill of Rights). Mason’s statement would forces duty to God as religion itself and Christianity as the practice of religion; that contradiction or social force has guided America’s “freedom of religion.”>>>>Christians have worked to make the theocracy whole since 1789, and made a big advance in 1954 with the insertion of the prayer "under God," into the pledge of allegiance. Based on that date, the decline since then has taken fifty-eight years. Since the Civil War was not lesson enough, it seems to me America needs separation of church and state more than ever before.

Video games didn't kill anybody. Neither did taking prayer out of the schools. Outlawing guns in the school grounds didn't stop the killing, either. A crazy s-o.b. did it. No laws or praying have ever shown much effectiveness at stopping the crazy people - and never will. We may have been founded on Christian principles, but it is not correct to call us a Christian nation. It may even be the dominate religion, but we are a secular nation that allows free worship of all religions. It's a tragedy. They happen sometimes and kneejerk reactions/solutions are not advised.

Video games have caused no murders and are not the cause of the supposed decline of America. Violence, including video violence is a symptom of a society where people call themselves pro-life but that sentiment ends at the birth of a baby and there is no respect for anyone.......Prayer in public schools. I ask again. No one ever seems to want to answer.: WHOSE PRAYER. Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Tongues, Hindu? Want kids to handle snakes? Whose prayer are you going to pray in today's diverse public schools? Prayer and God were never removed from public schools. Only required worship was. Ask a teacher. Teachers know and can tell you prayer goes on every day. As for America being a Christian nation: No, America is not a Christian nation. We are a nation based in the Christian principles of freedom and diversity just like Jesus taught when he told the Samaritan woman about the living water. .....Music: Rock and Roll was once called Satan's music. Classical was once called Satan's music. Big Band was once called Satan's music. I listen to classic country and they play a song, probably from the 1950s called "Wake Up Little Susie" where two kids on a date were supposed to be in by 10:00 and they fell asleep in the theater. They are worried that their parents will be mad and their friends will say "oo la la". Times change. Music changes. Fashions change. But I will tell you something, if you WANT to find God, go to church or listen to a service on the Internet. You will find God is still their and still working in the lives of God's people. We had a service Sunday where the pastor talked about John 3:16. WHOSOEVER believes in me I will accept. Then Christmas Eve we were back at church and today we had dinner, those of us who wanted to attend. We prayed there, ate, and fellowshipped. And we won't let anyone tell us we are not God's children. We are whosoevers. God loves us and we love God and look like heaven will look-----interracial and socio-economically diverse. We are not far from God. Find a church that does not preach hate or politics and that welcomes everyone.

DMJ, Mr. Kirby didn’t say that God sent a killer into that school to punish us because we took prayer out of the schools! What an asinine statement that is. God doesn’t punish us. We’re the experts in that field. Our arrogance and lack of compassion for each other, is all it takes to drive some over the edge. So if you want to place the blame on anyone, place it on society, as a whole. As for prayer, I doubt that you even know the meaning of the word. In fact, this world knows more about preying on others, than praying for them. What a sad scenario of our times.

At last I know what to blame for the "downward spiral of America." And all along, I thought it was either when we freed the slaves or gave women the vote. (I never could quite decide.) Thanks for clearing that up!

I agree with the three previous commentators. If you are going pick a starting point for the cause of the violence, shouldn't it be the Bugs Bunny cartoons? Perhaps the widespread drinking of pasteurized milk did it. That may sound silly, but the letter writer started it. I especially agree with 1ryben's last sentence.

When did a gun become a Christian symbol? Sure seems like it. Nothing worse than o religious zealot with a gun. So let's see, let's blame a video game but not a gun?!? What the??!? If you can't blame the gun, you can't possibly blame a video game! One puts actual bullets in kids and one...well...doesn't. Explain the logic again? Quit with the Christian nation rubbish. It's do small minded and a huge disrespect to millions of bus heathens. Oh and prayer was both never removed from schools nor ever required. Such idiocy shouldn't be given space in a legitimate newspaper.

23) Comment by postscript56 - 24/12/2012

Uh, Tony, what makes those corrupting video games so violent, with no value for human life? The players use guns to "kill." Look, I'm not anti-gun. But how can you continue to ignore the obvious? If Lanza is not carrying a weapon that can fire 30 rounds as fast as he can pull the trigger it is almost certain he could not have killed 20 kids and 6 adults that morning. There was probably a gun just like that in the video games he used for practice. To say that weapon is not a problem is just ignorant. I don't even want to attempt to address your "understanding" of what it means to be a Chrstian.

God has not been taken out of the schools or out of any other government agency. According to U.S. Department of Education guidelines prayer is legal in all public schools and government institutions. Students can pray in the schools, bring religious literature to school, have religious clubs. However, schools can not organize. proselytize, or endorse religion because it is a violation of church and state, especially egregious in schools because students are a captive audience.
