Letter: Light obscenity demeans Christmas

In regard to the Denham Springs woman who used Christmas lights on the roof of her house to make an obscene gesture:

I understand the right to freedom of speech, i.e. expression.

What I fail to understand is how the behavior of this resident can be condoned or, worse, defended by anyone or any group. Certainly, she has the right to make something beautiful into something ugly. All of us have that right.

Where, though is the sense of personal responsibility and love for others, especially in this wonderful season of love and caring?

In my opinion, this action blasphemes the spirit of Christmas, and, admittedly, she did it to insult her neighbors.

How can personal responsibility be fostered when such bad judgment is condoned?

Thank God that I live in a caring neighborhood, Hundred Oaks. One of our beloved elderly residents, Danie Singleton, was buried Tuesday, and the whole neighborhood family rallied around to pay its respects. She had no children, but all of us in our great neighborhood were her children. All of us were there for her, as she had been for us in her younger years.

We intend to plant a live oak in her memory.

I am so glad Ms. Hostility does not live near us.

But then, we would probably follow the Bible teaching “wipe the sand off our sandals,” walk away and pray for her.

twinkie, you left out the second largest group in the US, those who claim no religious preference.

Christmas spending is great for the economy; what could be wrong with it?

Ms. Armstrong, the blaspheme of Christmas started as soon as big business figured out they could make a dollar off it. The true meaning of Christmas was lost a long time ago, now it is nothing more that a way for big business to sell it's over priced merchandise to the gullible public. Heck, I don't know why people like Ms. Armstrong are so riled up, big business has been flipping the public off for years and we smile and say thank you. Christmas, personely I hate it, the only good thing about it, I get some extra time off with pay off for hunting.

@DMJ: I think you are correct. The best course would have been to ignore the woman. Ignoring her permanently would be even better. The person is basically saying "to perdition with everyone." . . . much more crudely If you let people like that bother you, they win. But if no one pays them any attention. . .

The woman obviously wanted attention. Instead of ignoring her, everyone is more than happy to oblige. I guess she got what she wanted for Christmas. Happy Festivus, everyone!!

Being STupid, you have a good point today. While celebrating Christmas we should also clearly acknowledge those who don't and recognize their holidays a little better too. There are Jews, Hindus, Muslims, and Jehovah Witnesses among us who could use more respect also. Let's try to be more inclusive.

Yes, it does demean the spirit of Christmas. It is also a great reason to reach out to the woman and help her feel it. I'll bet if her neighbors showed her some special attention and Christian love and not "tough love" that she would be less angry. Usually that is what people who do such things need........ On the other hand her display is quinnessentially American. When a person can do something ugly but not dangerous, she is expressing her God- given right to free speech. I only wish she had expressed her grievance in a way that might have solved the problem.

blasphemes the spirit of Christmas? I thinks this starts in November when all the TV commercials start. There is no more spirit of Christmas if there were no one would spend a penny on gifts, just reflect on family and friends.

yea, for no apparent reason, unprovoked, this woman flipped off the whole neighborhood. why because they have been so nice to her?.

What about the Jews? Don't we get to be offended too? This is not only Christmas but Hanukkah too.

Sometimes people have the right to say things you don't agree with, Annabelle. You refer to the season as "Christmas," which denigrates the wonderful celebration of the winter solstice. That is the celebration that was hi-jacked by the church and made into Christmas. What is to be more treasured than either is the constitutional rights we have as Americans. Livingston Parish politicians still don't understand. I suggest they all get a copy of the US Constitution and read it. The ACLU will provide one for free.
