Letter: Obama victorious, but not correct

As a result of the recent election, I have lost all faith in the majority of the American people to do the right thing.

This comes after broken promises, record debt (Obamacare), desertion in the face of enemies (Benghazi), unsecured porous borders, moral decay (aberration), failure to call terrorism by its name (Ft. Hood) and outright lies and distortion. In the Corps, we never left anyone behind, dead or alive,

I believe we are headed for destruction, not from outside enemies, but from within (Rome). The mentality of “What’s in it for me?” is prevalent. With half of the country paying no federalincome tax and on some kind of welfare, the present situation is unsustainable and the rest of us will shortly no longer be willing to continue to support the status quo. Yes, Barack Obama won, but that does not make him right. Jesus was right and he was crucified.

President Obama campaigned for reelection on the ideas of a tax increase on the most wealthy and a balanced approach of such an increase and spending cuts. Now that he has been reelected the story has greatly changed. He now wants double the amount of the tax increase on the most wealthy that he previously claimed to want. He wants to put off the spending cuts to a later date and he wants immediate new spending in the amount of another Stimulus spending package in the sum of 50 billion dollars. The amount will probably increase over time. There goes the the majority of the any spending cuts. It casts a great doubt on the idea that he or his party will ever agree to real spending cuts or even reductions in the rate of spending increases. This is greatly reminiscent of the agreement President Reagan made to increase taxes and then come up with spending cuts. Those spending cuts never happened. There is absolutely no reason this time will be any different. The last point is supported by the fact that another thing President Obama wants to do is to permanently remove the power of Congress to place a cap on federal government spending. The hubris of the man is gobsmacking!

It's always interesting to me to see the locical contortions people go through to get to the conclusion they want. As a liberal Democrat, I am very, very grateful to the "tea party" crowd. You were a key part in our recent winning election. So, thank you, and keep up the good work.

gvm, To be honest, I really don't care, but according to the MSM it would be Bush. They don't report on Obama's mistakes. They only give excuses. Both men are guilty, but there has been a big contrast between reporting by the MSM. And over exaggerating the Republican platform with half lies is hard to take, so I do try to point out those extreme exaggerations and generalizations.

What it must be like inside the mind of a conservative like rgeraldwallce. Cold, nasty, paranoid... No thanks. Seriously, dude, do you really believe the stuff you write? Or are you just being ironic, trying to think of the most ridiculous thing you can possibly articulate? When it's difficult to tell if someone is expressing what they actually believe or if they're being sarcastic...you've got a problem.

It's amazing how many come out to defend..., the staus quo, I guess. Ever since the Democrats took SS out of the lockbox to fund their welfare state things have gone steadily downhill. SS money was used to construct all the "ghettos" and pay the people to stay in them.

Marland-- News flash: in this country we have always had at least two political parties. Sometimes the party you don't like wins. And the country still goes on.

14) Comment by MBW - 29/11/2012

So sick of the hypocrisy from the Right on this stuff. While Marland degrades fully half of America, i'm sure he's perfectly fine taking all of the tax deductions he's allowed to take. But if somebody else with a job takes a tax deduction, it's welfare. Shut. Up. Please.

Cleveland, Philly, Detroit and several other major urban centers in the US have several things in common: Democrats have been in control for years. They gave Obama overwhelming support. They are crumbling, have high unemployment and high dependency on government, and they are bankrupt or headed for bankruptcy.

17) Comment by agagent - 29/11/2012

The national debt was below $9 trillion when the Democrats took control of Congress in January, 2007. Democrats have had the balance of power or complete control in Washington since. They have controlled spending and policies for almost 6 years now. Even their disastrous defeat in 2010 did not slow the spending very much.

18) Comment by Hello Baton Rouge - 29/11/2012

At least give Obama credit for breaking the federal deficit record. My question is simple. Can we continue to 'blame the guy that was in office for the last 4 years' or is that concept no longer 'cool'? We need to figure out how to blame the president from several years ago instead of the 'last president'. Tips?

@Tea_Slayer: "I can tell you that you wiil not get SSI (or so little that it’s not worth the trouble) if you haven't worked or don't currently work. It's called SUPPLIMENTAL for a reason." You are partially correct in this statement. However, it doesn't matter whether you worked as far as the monthly SSI payment amount is concerned. Any Social Security benefits an aged or disabled person is eligible to receive will be subtracted from the monthly SSI benefit amount. So the number of dollars per month available to the SSI recipients in the end is about the same. A person isn't going to receive whatever SS benefit they are entitled to plus the full SSI benefit. It only provides enough for a meager existence at best but with Medicaid Benefits and Food Stamps. . . even then?! I never worked with a person who received SSI who would not have been happier to be eligible for a larger SS benefit. It isn't something they had control over in a lot of cases. But it is what it is. -[**]- As for whether a person who receives SS benefits is a taker, unless you worked in one of the few situations where you weren't required by law to pay into the SS system, you really had no choice but to pay into the system. If you subsequently are a "taker", you were first a "taken from". @gvm I believe Vice President Biden is at least a peer where the gaffe is concerned. Plus his behavior sometimes approaches those souls with Tourettes.

wow i should get on here more often during the day. i doubt any of the nitwits will see my response as this late point. first let's get something straight. i am a veteran - not retired, but honorably discharged. so if i wanna knock the military or ex-military i earned that right. if you didn't, then ***** but i'm not knocking mendoza for his service, but for failing to realize he is as guilty as those he whines about. he didn't have to pay income taxes. that makes him part of the 47%. he gets a government benefit. that makes him part of the 47%. doesn't matter if he "earned" it. the government pays his pension and his medical/dental/vision. that makes him part of the 47%. i served in the military but i don't take any government benefits, speakthetruth, so what "kind" are you talking about? rgeraldwallace - social security IS an earned benefit. you pay into that. attila - it is you and your ilk who constantly whine about anyone receiving a government benefit as a "taker," a non-producer, living off the hard work of others, lazy, sitting around waiting for a government handout. did you read my reply? i asked, rhetorically, if that isn't exactly what folks like you claim about anyone taking a government benefit. ok, so rhetorical questions are too complex for you folks. the point is that lazy non-producing 47% you nitwits love to whine about includes people like mendoza. sheesh, its like talking to a bunch of five year olds.

@Whatnow: who, in your opinion, is more gaffe prone - President Obama or former President Bush?

22) Comment by Whatnow - 28/11/2012

" President Obama is careful with his words. Words have a great deal of power and are easily misinterpreted." and "He wants to be sure his facts are accurate. " Really, Twinkie1cat? I don't think you would even want to go there. Actions also speak. As a speaker and as the main representative of our country, his gaffes are too numerous to count, (it would have been worse without his teleprompter) but when covering his rear end, he is very careful not to implicate himself or his administration. Although, when things usually get tough, he skips town or laughs about it or says it's incredulous, but we never hear the real story from him or the MSM. And it's usually blamed on someone else, like Bush. Bush was the constant butt of many jokes from the liberal media, but with Obama, it was either someone's fault or misinterpreted. Poor Jay Carney sure earns his money correcting Obama's words.

23) Comment by Whatnow - 28/11/2012

@twinkie1cat, " that her purpose is to be a wife and mother whether she wants to or not?" A wife? And it's the Republican party that made her get pregnant? Sounds like a choice she made or should have made earlier. "Killing or at least segregating the gay community comes right in there with these beliefs?" Show me where murder is in the Republican platform. You probably believe that story about Romney killing Joe Soptic's wife. If you do, you will believe anything the MSM tells you to. Your talking points are way over the top.

24) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 28/11/2012

swinham, I do understand what you are trying to say. It is true that you MAY be eligible for SSI if you never paid into SS; however, as someone who has applied for benefits for a family member, I can tell you that you wiil not get SSI (or so little that it’s not worth the trouble) if you haven't worked or don't currently work. It's called SUPPLIMENTAL for a reason.

25) Comment by swinham - 28/11/2012

Tea_Slayer: One need never have worked a day in one's life to be eligible for SSI. I realize arguing about this is frutiless and superfluous to this discussion, but I think statements of error must be corrected. The first statement on the link I sent says: "Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security tax)" You might also look here and elsewhere for confirmation of the fact one need never have worked to be eligible for SSI (another Social Security link): http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/93/~/supplemental-security-income-(ssi) which says, in part: "SSI is Social Security's program providing monthly income to people age 65 or older, blind or disabled who have limited income and financial resources. You also can be eligible even if you have never worked in a job covered under Social Security.

Truth Bites A. Signed up for military service to defend Americans' right to not do what one might not like; to do the Commander-in-Chief's will, whether or not one likes him/her. B. Military pension part of deficit, but I'm happy to pay for it, along with affordable health care, etc. for all Americans. C. Misplaced/Inconsistent Anger--should be angered by: temporary vote buying (Bush tax cuts) made permanent; two unnecessary, mismanaged military expeditions; abandonment of Kurds; neglect of (if not support for) Taliban/al Qaeda threat for years; rich people exploiting cheap labor from across the border; voter suppression and intimidation; corporations granted more rights/influence than citizens; allowing (if not pushing) more people into poverty. D. Incorrect Analogy: More like fifth-fourth century (BCE) Athens than Rome. E. Point of Agreement, with Caveat: "What's in it for me" attitude runs rampant, but those with the most leading the pack, setting the (double ) standard. F. Odd/Faulty Comparison: mortal officer of a limited branch in a tripartite government who is elected by people in a secular democracy, is constrained by term limits, is answerable to the citizenry; religious martyr who was appointed by/embodying a testy Middle-Eastern god within a society dominated by imperial and theocratic powers, who abides by no physical/mortal laws, and who ultimately answers to no one but himself. G. Conclusion: letter-writer unintentially demonstrates where the wrong in the US actually lies.

What I will say about labeling an act as terrorism is that President Obama is careful with his words. Words have a great deal of power and are easily misinterpreted, especially with our instant news cycle and technology. He wants to be sure his facts are accurate before he stirs up the American people and not make the mistake George W. Bush did with "weapons of mass destruction" being used as an excuse to start a war that threw America into a recession that very nearly destroyed us............... Now about the "moral decay" of America. One of Mr. Mendoza's slurs (aberration) appears to be an attack on the glbt community. Accompanied by the "porous borders" comment he is obviously a participant in the groups who show prejudice in all areas of life. They vote Republican, support the dictatorship of Bobby Jindal and, when they think of "welfare", the picture in their mind is of an African-American. Welfare is just a nice way to say "racist" and because Obama identifies as black, they are against him. They are holding up what they have described as the "good old days" which really means when only white men counted as the ideal of America. If a person is racist there is a very good likelihood that they are also mysogynistic, opposed to immigration (especially of brown people) homophobic, and don't believe a woman should control her own body or her future, that her purpose is to be a wife and mother whether she wants to or not. Killing or at least segregating the gay community comes right in there with these beliefs. Racism, sexism, anti-immigration, and homophobia are all Republican values and most have at least two of them. Add to that the prevalence of membership in fundamentalist religious organizations and you have a clear picture of the GOP. The only estrangement here is conservative Republicans who were also born gay and know and accept this fact of life, another one of the cultural differences of Louisiana. The moral decay of America is in the GOP and is part and parcel its message. The GOP is America's moral decacy. Jesus said love and accept others, including those different from you. They say hate your neighbor if he doesn't look like you and make up a bunch of fake rules that apply only to others, but pretend they are based on the Bible because Muslims are as immoral as gay people.

Ok Mr. Mendoza, retired Marine. Do you realize, like the retired postal worker in yesterday's Advocate that you are part of the 47%, the folks that Romney and his "moral" Republicans so hate? Don't you get a military pension and medical care from the Veterans Administration? Did you buy your house at low or no interest under the GI bill? Did you get to go to college under that same bill? Do you get a free car tag because you served in the military? And wasn't that a living wage you got while you were defending our country? While our all volunteer army serves willingly, they do get paid. And the money they get comes from the taxpayers, not private donations. According to Mitt Romney and the GOP, anyone who gets benefits from the government thinks he or she is entitled and is lazy. And that definition, by definition has to include retired veterans. I salute you for your willing service but you need to realize that the GOP hates everyone who receives any kind of return for their tax money and thinks that the only citizens of value are those who work for a profit making company.

@postscript56: You should pray to your God every night and thank Him for people like Mr. Mendoza who put themselves in harms way so that you have the right to make such doltish remarks. Did you serve? If so, thank you for your service. If not, you show your ignorance by comparing Mr. Mendoza's pension with welfare. According to your convoluted logic anyone who works for any government entity did not "earn" his pension. No, in your small mind it is welfare. If you chose not to make the military a career, or to work in the private sector instead of government, you have to live with the consequences of your choice. Berating someone who at one point in his life wrote a check to the United States for an amount up, and including his life, shows a complete lack of character, class, and education on your part....and by the way Einstein, the only part of Mr. Mendoza's pay that was tax free was the portion he EARNED while serving in a war zone. You should be thanking him for having the onions to do it.,

postscript56, you are off base in trying to demonize Mr. Mendoza by attempting to group him with people who didn't serve in the military, didn't work for their unearned social security benefits but constantly bleat for more free benefits as a payoff for voting democrat. He's not a politician who votes himself huge benefits, nor is his pension funded by corrupt politicians in league with unions. Besides all of that, he's right.

I'd like to point out though that Mendoza, retired from the Marine Corps and probably receiving a pension as well as full health care benefits. is one of those people "on some kind of welfare." Yes I know he "worked" for his pension but it comes from the government so that makes it welfare. Isn't that what people like Mendoza like to claim about others? Plus, while he was active duty he paid no income tax. I wonder if Mendoza realizes he is the person he is bitching about?

I agree with the gist of Mr. Mendoza's letter...Americans, as a whole, have bought into the mindset that one must vote democrat or republican or their vote has been wasted. Democrats and republicans have failed the general public in many of the areas Mr. Mendoza outlines here, and many he did not explore. Instead of letting a third party that more accurately reflects the standard American's views rise up in the ranks...it seems anti-liberals vote republican and anti-conservatives vote democrat while saying they wish there were a better option. I fell in love with the Constitution Party myself...when reading their stance on the issues...well, it just seemed to make more sense to me than the two-party rut we're stuck in.

59) Comment by brcitizen2010 - 27/11/2012

Gvm, How right you are when you say “Ain’t it grand to be on the losing side of the election.” The only problem with that statement is that those on the losing side don’t realize that they’re the ones who have lost. You see, President Obama is merely a pawn being used by a much more dangerous adversary than you could ever imagine. Obama has no real power to speak of. He is merely a figure head, a distraction designed to appease the masses by making us believe that with a Black President in office, all is finally right with the world. Don’t get me wrong, I have respect for President Obama in his attempt to unite the nation but the control does not belong to him. It really doesn’t matter which Party is elected into the White House. If you really want to know who is in control look up the Koch Brothers or members of the Washington Elite who follow in the footsteps of Cecil Rhodes, aka Rhodes Scholars. That should keep you busy for awhile. We know more about Hollywood celebrities than we know about the inner workings of Washington and that’s the sad truth.

60) Comment by swinham - 27/11/2012

At least Mr. Mendoza seems to be using his own words and not lifting the bulk of his comments directly from some other source as Mr. Kelly did when providing a longer treatise in this same vein. Mr. Mendoza has written a letter, but he is not correct and the more people who think he is correct, the more divided our country will become.

Would you like some cheese with that whine? Seriously, the re-election of President Obama didn't suddenly precipitate this great moral decline you suggest. It would be a tad easier to take sentiments such as these if they were not so biased and myopic. The president is not the bogey man, life is not going to end soon and, though the country will eventually fail, it won't be tomorrow. Ain't it grand to be on the losing side of an election?
