Our Views: A new power in U.S. ideals

Perhaps under-appreciated in the clutter of the election campaign, President Barack Obama’s speech to the United Nations’ General Assembly has outlined a good path forward for this country in a world troubled by religious fanatics.

The speech came in the wake of yet new evidence of the power of fanaticism to overpower good judgment, and of the use of religious enthusiasms for secular purposes.

Beyond the recent riot at the Cairo embassy, and a deadly terrorist attack on the Benghazi consulate, there is a long history of riots and even deaths inspired by religious fanatics, whether upset by mocking of Islam’s prophet, or burning of Qurans, or other events over which the U.S. government has no control.

So Obama’s speech was first of all an explicit repudiation of violence in the name of God.

“There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents,” Obama declared.

“There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon, or destroy a school in Tunis, or cause death and destruction in Pakistan,” he added.

After 9/11, when Muslims and Jews perished alike with Christians and Hindus and others in terrorist attacks, Americans might well have been forgiven for thinking that the diversity of Americans lost in that tragedy would emphasize to the world the irrational nature of religious violence against a pluralist country.

Yet if there has been one lesson since then, it is that the world does not get one of the fundamentals of our communal process in this country: freedom of religion.

As we go forward, the world continues to divide violently over questions that in America are mostly argued about, and rarely incite people to violence. For Obama, clearly, the UN speech looked out at a world where American values are not shared but are widely unappreciated.

Among his key points was freedom of speech, in a world where blasphemy is very often a crime, and religious minorities a target.

“Given the power of faith in our lives, and the passions that religious differences can inflame, the strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech,” Obama said.

And who can control free speech in an Internet world? “When anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button, the notion that we can control the flow of information is obsolete,” Obama said.

So far so good, but the president also challenged the nations to live the Golden Rule in religious expression: “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. Yet to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see when the image of Jesus Christ is desecrated, churches are destroyed, or the Holocaust is denied.”

Extremism will betray the hopes of those in the “Arab spring” of popular movements, the president warned. “It is time to marginalize those who — even when not resorting to violence — use hatred of America, or the West, or Israel as a central principle of politics,” Obama said. “For that only gives cover, and sometimes makes excuses, for those who resort to violence.”

Obama’s speech was not only a wise general policy, but made a specific point better understood abroad than in the United States: The Cairo embassy riot was inspired by both religion and politics. Many Egyptians were offended by a crude anti-Islam video produced in the United States. But the rioters were organized and fueled by a particular Islamic sect that had finished out of the money in the recent Egyptian elections.

In this season of religious holidays for all faiths, and America’s broad secular feast of Thanksgiving, the Obama speech deserves to be heard, as it represents a broader way forward, in which Americans — whether through our diplomats, or their own relationships with friends around the world — should promote an alternative to religious extremists.

Rice is a henchman.

Rice was not a mushroom. She had the intelligence before going on TV: “Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., speaks with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. on Tuesday to talk about his meeting with U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice. After his meeting, McCain said Rice had information about the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya that "clearly contradicted" her statements on the tragedy.”--Washington Times

Well. . . Duh!!! "CAIRO (AP) -- An Egyptian court convicted in absentia Wednesday seven Egyptian Coptic Christians and a Florida-based American pastor, sentencing them to death on charges linked to an anti-Islam film that had sparked riots in parts of the Muslim world." -[**]- This sort of change has happened before in other countries where "democratic" processes have come about in other countries in that part of the world, places where majority rule is put into place with protective safeguards for the rights of minorities. Democratic processes and majority rule becomes the law of the land, the majority decides to implement Sharia as the basis for the law of the land, it becomes harder for religious and other minorities who do not adhere to the dominant flavor of Islam held by the majority(including other Islamic sects Kurds, Shiites, Sunni, etc.) to live in the society. Where possible many of these minorities leave the country. In some cases this is the reason American Lebanese Christians have come to this country. Of course some Lebanese who adhere to Islam have also moved here for similar and also for many other reasons.

What we really need to know is where was The President in the decision making process concerning both the developing Benghazi situation in the months prior and during the 7 and a half hours while the attack was taking place and four Americans were dying. Did he even know? Had he previously delegated this to another in the administration or what?

Strange, when GWB stated how his admin used the "intelligence agencies information" for his launch of the invasion of Iraq, he was called a liar by the same people defending Rice. Not only that but the world's "intelligence agencies" had the same information. Congress saw the entire thing and still voted to resume the Iraq war. But, Obama didn't follow procedure with Libya. And with Benghazi, and the film going straight to the situation room, they knew right away what it was and still lied about a film. Even John Stewart saw the lies. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-october-1-2012/american-terror-story. Twenty four hours???? They knew while it was happening.

As far as the power of U.S. Ideals in the Middle East, they are much reduced. U.S. influence in the region is far less it was just two decades ago. Just as the Taliban blew up the ancient statues of The Budda in Afghanistan, the zealots in Egypt are talking about wanting to destroy the pyramids and the sphinx. . . So power in ideals. . . n o t so m u c h!

U.S. Officials Knew Libya Attacks Were Work of Al Qaeda Affiliates -[**]- "Within 24 hours of the 9-11 anniversary attack on the United States consulate in Benghazi, U.S. intelligence agencies had strong indications al Qaeda–affiliated operatives were behind the attack, and had even pinpointed the location of one of those attackers. Three separate U.S. intelligence officials who spoke to The Daily Beast said the early information was enough to show that the attack was planned and the work of al Qaeda affiliates operating in Eastern Libya." -[**]- http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/09/26/u-s-officials-knew-libya-attacks-were-work-of-al-qaeda-affiliates.html -[**]- Now it is being reported that al Qaeda couldn't be mentioned for security reasons. If something is classified, you don't come up with some kind of cock-and-bull story to misdirect as was said by the WH spokesman, The President and Amb. Rice in the days following the Benghazi attack. You either say something un-classified which will eventually support facts should you decide they should come out and/or with something that doesn't intentionally mislead OR YOU DON'T SAY ANYTHING AS IN "NO COMMENT", OR THE INVESTIGATION IS IN THE EARLY STAGES.

@Old Man Kensey: As I mentioned in my first post on this topic Amb .Rice is just a "mushroom" in the whole Benghazi issue and a distraction from the real issues and problems. Whether or not senator McCain is wrong on one issue or the other is also moot. The fact that the United States ignored clear examples of developing hazards in Benghazi and did nothing after repeated attempts by those stationed in Libya to do something to improve the security is the real damning point. I don't really understand the laser focus on Rice. It is focusing on a distraction from the real problem. But why send someone who was not fully informed or indulge in speculation as to what was going on before you really knew what in the world you were talking about. Far better for Congress to look at what led up to the death of four Americans to hopefully prevent such loss in the future. -[**]- The ridiculous attempts to claim it was about a stupid video(spontaneous protest) which was known not to be true by U.S. Intelligence services within about 24 hours of the attack and subsequent deaths??? Something is very wrong with the conduct of national security services, the administration, or both in this whole episode. -[**]- What in the heck did you think you were doing with all of that html code? Perhaps Tea_Slayer can help you out with your internet research and clipping skills. Next time try and find a source not so obviously biased. You might actually come up with something anyone in the opposite choir might accept as a fair argument.

11) Comment by Old Man Kensey - 27/11/2012

My last thoughts on this attack of Rice by McCain. When you actually listen to the arguments of McCain, what you hear is that he wanted Rice to ignore the security systems we have and go "with her gut" that she "should have known" better than what the CIA told her. This is a crazy and scary position for a Senator to take. Do we really want our politicians to ignore our Security Apparatus? Do we really want them doing what their guts tell them to do?

InPiville, you didn't present a mutual challenge. You want me to do your work for you. Bottom line, you have no case against Rice. But, thanks for the 100 year summary of our policy in the Middle East, none of which implicates Rice to any wrongdoing. it is not up to me to prove she is innocent. It is up to you to make a case and prove that she is guilty of something... anything. But you can't. The Republicans politicized Benghazi before the smoke even cleared. Y'all were wrong for doing that then, y'all are still wrong for continuing it with no proof now. Show some proof or shut up. >>>>>>> As for John McCain, he has proved himself irrelevant. Did you even bother to check out the link I provided for what I said about the attack on the British Ambassador I posted? Who is crying. The problem with the Benghazi story didn't start with the attack on September 11, 2012. All of the things that happened before were efforts to check what the response to provocations would be. When nothing was done to protect the U.S. staff and the other Western interests left, the fanatics did what was left to do to ensure no western national influence remained in east Libya. It leaves them in a stronger position to try to create another Islamic state with Sharia Law as it basis. -[**]- Morsi's recent actions to position himself as the new Hasni Mubarak in Egypt indicates where the whole Arab Spring episodes are leading. . . one bad ruler replaced by another of the same.

@DMJ: "And somehow this becomes about Benghazi. Ugh... You guys overplayed your hand on that issue, and it backfired." -[**]- In March, 2012 State Dept. Regional Security Officer Eric Nordstrom asked for additional diplomatic security agents for Benghazi, and did so again in July. No response to either request was received. On April 6, 2012 an IED was thrown over the fence of the U.S. consulate. On May 22 an Islamist attack was made on the Benghazi Red Cross Office. On June 6, a hole described by a witness to be big enough for 40 men to go through was blown in the U.S. consulate's gate. On June 10 the British ambassador's car was attacked by militants with an RPG. By the end of June both the Red Cross and the British had closed operations in Benghazi and left. "The Video" wasn't posted on YouTube until July. Not only was no additional security ever provided to our people in Benghazi but an SST team led by Lt. Col Andy Wood left the country Aug 14. Lt. Col Wood's has stated that Ambassador Stevens wanted them to stay. Don't know who ordered the SST team to leave. Apparently both the Red Cross and the British cared a great deal more for the safety of their personnel in Benghazi than did the U.S. The fact that the media has failed to fully cover what went in Benghazi before and during the attack and the administration's failure to explain itself says more about the media and the administration than it does about the failure of the critics to get either to pay attention. -[**]- At a minimum Susan Rice served as a "mushroom" on the topic of the Benghazi attack. . . kept in the dark and fed ***** It was obvious that the attack had nothing to do with the stupid video. If she had any competence at all, she should have known this. Instead she appeared to show willful ignorance and spread a fog of disinformation. -[**]- Ms. Rice has been ineffective at the U.N. She didn't appear for the first two emergency Security Council meetings on the Arab Spring revolution last year, was silent when Iran was elected to the U.N. women's committee, was absent from the Haiti crisis meeting, skipped the last open meeting before the planned UN vote on recognition of Palestinian statehood. She has only managed one resolution on Iran and that was about 30 months ago with only 12 votes of support, the worst result ever for an Iranian sanctions resolution . The list goes on and on. The record doesn't speak well for her promotion.
