Letter: GOP attitude toward election scary

What was I thinking? I thought the election had resolved some basic issues. Silly me.

Never mind President Barack Obama campaigned on and was elected to increase taxes on those earning more than a quarter of a million dollars a year. House Republicans reject taxes.

Never mind the Supreme Court ruled the Affordable Care Act constitutional and Republicans made the election into a national referendum on health care — and lost. Republican governors reject health-care legislation.

Never mind the radical-right message has no appeal to most black people, Hispanics, Asians, young voters and over half the women in this country. Republicans reject the messenger.

Never mind a majority of voters in a majority of states chose another path. Republicans reject all other paths as socialism.

Never mind America is built on majority rule and an election determines the majority. Republicans reject the majority as un-American.

It would all be so deliciously ironic if it weren’t so scary.

Republicans again find themselves in the strange position of hoping Mr. Obama fails because this would prove them right. Hoping for the President to do poorly is very un-American. Actively trying to make sure he can't do anything is un-patriotic.

Once again some of you right wingers still don't get it. Reality check: you lost for a 2nd straight time. Reality check: the majority of Americans voted for President Obama. Reality check: majority of Americans are tired of your angry and hateful politics/attitude. Realty check: the majority of Americans did not believe your lies during the campaign and don't believe them now. Funny, I am still trying to find the weapons of mass destruction you claimed we're in Iraq!

If we are all voting privately in a closed booth, how does anyone know these precise percentages for who voted how? From Laugh In "Veeerrryyy Interessting"

Romney's 48.1% broken down: 88% White, 2% Black, 6% Latino, 2% Asian, 2% Other...Obama's 51%: 56% White, 24% Black, 14% Latino, 4% Asian, 2% Other. Now who represents more of the American population?

Obama got 95% of the black vote.... Some people should not be allowed to vote until they are capable of independent thought...

Obama may be Santa Clause today but sooner or later people will realize that the money for the toys comes from the family budget.

Those who have suffered understand suffering and thus are ready to extend a helping hand. For some (such as Attila), however, it's far easier to categorize, point fingers, and fall back on the myth of the lazy welfare recipient than to actually think through the situation and conclude that not everyone in the "47%" are shiftless, lazy non-workers who are cashing in a monthly welfare check. Nobody would argue that there are people out there who would rather sit back and draw a check from the government as opposed to going to a job that they might hate everyday. However, those malingerers are not so numerous as some would have you believe. Many of the poor who receive government aid also work, but what they bring home is little enough that they do not have to pay taxes on it, and they still qualify for government assistance. I do not see a problem with lending assistance to such people, as well as the disabled and senior citizens. I do think it is regrettable that a working person does not make enough to support himself or herself or a family without resorting to government aid, though. Crime and welfare are separate issues, by the way. There are plenty of middle and upper class thieves.

To all you good conservatives who are outraged that 47% of americans pay no income taxes why aren't you just as outraged that these people don't make enough money to pay those taxes? Shouldn't that be the question? Shouldn't all these "job creators" that were handed their Bush tax cuts be creating enough jobs for everyone? I mean that's what you believe right? That was the reason these rich people had to have these tax cuts right? Well where are all these "good paying" jobs? Here's a news flash for you. All that money they are saving on those lower taxes.... they're keeping it for themselves. And @ Attila you forgot to throw in the "welfare cadillac" in your little rant. And yes I know, no one who post here is a racist.

some of you folks most closely resemble first century pharisees - convinced of your own purity and righteousness, you have "the truth" and follow "the law" and blame all those loathsome "sinners" for the state of the world. thank god you are now a permanent minority in this country. but don't worry. ignorance is bliss, they say.

14) Comment by Attila - 19/11/2012

The scary thing about the election is that there are apparently a SMALL majority of uninformed, gullible, poorly educated people who believe that the government is the be all end all in their lives. I fail to see why it is irresponsible to lump those who suck off of others, for whatever reason, as victims. But then again the Democrat party IS the party of those who consider themselves victims, misfits and malcontents who covet the things that others have. The 47% number is telltale because it exposes the numbers of people who perceive themselves as victims. That old whine that these people pay state taxes as well as sales taxes is a straw man because those of us who pay income taxes also pay those same taxes. The reason that a great portion of the 47% pay no income taxes is because the federal poverty level is set too HIGH. The definition of poverty is this country, compared to the rest of the world is a joke. How many people who are classified as in poverty are out stealing and committing crimes to put food on the table? Hardly any. How many of those classified as in poverty are doing without AC, microwaves, big screen TV, automobiles, or the latest in pro athletic fashions and $200 basketball shoes. They are out stealing HDTV's, cars, electronics, jewelry, and anything else they can turn into cash to feed their habits, and keep from getting a real job. Education to most of them is a dirty word, and a "job" has nothing to do with working.

15) Comment by Bouncer - 19/11/2012

There are several key points that are germane to the fact that "47% of Americans paid no federal income tax and are on some kind of federal aid." Bear in mind that the people who comprise the 47% either make too little to be taxed federally, or they get income credits that mitigate their tax liability. However, many of those same people still pay some state taxes as well as sales taxes, too. The 47% is largely composed of senior citizens on Social Security, disabled people, students, and the poor. It's irresponsible to lump 47% of the population together as members of a dependency class who sit around, do nothing, and get "free" money. That's a horribly distorted and skewed representation. And it's not just a matter of the 47% being Obama supporters. There are plenty of senior Republicans, too, who draw the same benefits.

postscript56, what is false about the facts that 47% of Americans paid no federal income tax and are on some kind of federal aid. California just voted to raise their own taxes.??? Only 17% of Californians made enough to pay state taxes. That means 83% can vote to tax 17%. Is that false construct that the takers can vote a tax hike on the makers - workers.

one more time for the deluded...there is no maker/taker society. that is a false construct devised by the most cynical of political operatives and designed to appeal to the most primitive prejudices among conservatives. and look how well it has worked! just so you folks know i am middle age, white, employed, pay my taxes, not getting a government handout and don't feel the need to demonize those who do - for whatever reason. guess what? there are millions like me.

Like I said, I'm just going to sit back and watch. At least maybe we won't have to listen to Obama try to sell himself anymore. Now we can just watch him lie his way out of blame for Benghazi, Fast and Furious, cronyism failures, you know, those successes of his.

20) Comment by speakthetruth - 19/11/2012

tradewinns, I too hope we go over the fiscal cliff. The leeches need a reality check, and the people need a wake up call.

21) Comment by tradewinns - 19/11/2012

the taxpayers better be paying attention regardless of who is in the government. politicians love to be loved and like christmas they love to give gifts, especially those they themselves don't have to pay for. i'm a taxpayer but unlike most (i guess) i hope the nation goes over the fiscal cliff. that seems to be the only way to get anyone's attention. if this is smoothed over, again, the can is just kicked further down the road and the taxpayer will, again, not pay attention! like the other great nations (empires, etc) we will destroy ourselves and our children's, grandchildren's, etc., future. that is what our current career welfare class is doing to their kids.

22) Comment by speakthetruth - 19/11/2012

lovemykids, your ignorance is showing. I was pointing out the total amount of taxes you pay, whether state or federal. But obviously you don't pay taxes, or would have known this. Take the blinders off and start drinking green tea instead of the cool-aid. Oh, I also suggest you look at how many "executive orders" have been issued by Obama in order to circumvent due process. At least the governor is trying to run this state without taking more of our money, despite all the rhetoric from the leaches.

23) Comment by rgeraldwallace@cox.net - 19/11/2012

Mr.Spillman is taking a victory lap, but why does it sound like he's still upset? Is it frustration that anyone with a half a brain is not convinced that Obama is the second coming? Euphoria won't start the economy, solve international issues, or bring back our slain ambassador and the unsupported Seals.

24) Comment by spqr - 19/11/2012

Never mind that Obama added $5 trillion to the debt in four years. And those evil (sic) Republicans could not stop it. Majority rule is mainly the mob who do not pay taxes.

25) Comment by agagent - 19/11/2012

Obama cares about blacks and his policies have increased black unemployment to over 14%. Obama cares about women, and they have suffered more job losses than men under Obama policies. Obama cares about green energy and taxpayers have lost billions of dollars to green energy businesses, especially those run by Obama supporters and bundlers. Obama cares about the middle class and his policies have crushed the middle class in the last 4 years.

26) Comment by lovemykids - 19/11/2012

Speakthetruth I was not aware that my local and state taxes went to the President's checking account. When did all three branches of our federal government make this happen? This rant is coming from a person who most likely voted for a governor who rules with an iron fist. A governor who makes things happen with political bribes or scare tactics. Do you also believe a majority of the People, Congress and the Supreme Court will grant the President absolute power so he make your wildest fears come true?

27) Comment by agagent - 19/11/2012

Maybe you did not notice that Republicans were elected in the House to stop Obama’s irresponsible spending, record deficits, looming debt, and Chicago-style corruption.

28) Comment by speakthetruth - 19/11/2012

just because the leaches of America now out number the workers, and the illegals are allowed to vote does not mean America is now headed in the right direction. The word democrat brings to mind voter fraud, racism, high taxes, high murder rates, blithe, and anything else that is bad for the country. The election wasn't a land slide. The country is divided and will remain so as long as the democrats rely on high taxation of the workers to buy the votes of the leaches, and the illegals, to get into office. Paul has been smelling the glue in his flooring too much, or he lied about his occupation. If he is a salesperson I can't imagine he is REALLY for a 28% federal tax, along with a state tax, sales tax, property tax, capital gains tax, etc. When they are all added up it comes to over 50% of my income goes to Obama and his leaches. That is why there is so much hate in this country, and it will only increase as the taxes go up along with the democrats who take it.

29) Comment by postscript56 - 19/11/2012

The GOP has lost the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 presidential elections and if not for gerrrymandering congressional districts might have lost the majority in the House in this election. But like I've said before, why let reality get in the way of a comfortable delusion?

30) Comment by InPVille - 19/11/2012

In the long term 51% of the voting population hardly settles anything. Actually the people who wrote the Constitution put things into it intended to mitigate against simple majority rule. Many of them feared the tyranny of the majority.
