Letter: If you don't like the game, don't go!

I really enjoy reading The Advocate, and especially enjoy the editorial page because there are usually business/civic/governmental matters of importance being discussed.

Usually this is the case, however, there was a letter by a lobbyist, Pete Martinez, that moved me to write this letter.

Per Mr. Martinez’s report, he and his family are big LSU fans and have been for a long time, his parents are season ticket-holders and he loves going to the LSU games. He was concerned about the “bush league” LSU fan behavior during the LSU-Alabama game: booing the Alabama band and doing a cheer that was not very nice. Well, I agree, that is not good sportsmanship to do at any game, on either side, anywhere. If you take a broader view, I believe it is fair to say that this type of behavior is not limited to just LSU fans.

With that in mind, here is how you can really help yourself:

A: You can donate your LSU tickets to someone else.

B: You can watch the game at home, or listen to it on the radio.

C: You can read about it later.

Please follow up and let us all know how you decide to solve your problem.

If you really do donate the tickets, tell us about how thrilled the people were to get them, how wonderful it was to see the big smiles on their faces and what a great time they had, and how even despite some “bush league” fan behavior, they managed somehow to survive it.

I bet they would love to tell you how great the LSU fan turnout was, (in the tens of thousands), how it was great having ESPN there, and all these major networks, how awesome the LSU band was, the fireworks, the touchdowns and how they were able to totally enjoy themselves without pegging other LSU fans about some of their over-the-top moments. And you would feel so good, because your problem was solved, you didn’t have to go to the game and you made someone else happy. Sweet deal!

The fact is the entire thing might be a game. They pay a coach $4 million a year, some of which comes from TV rights etc. The TV folks pay for that through commercials. Because of the high costs for TV commercials the average price of all goods goes up for everyone. I think we are all going to this game. I personally can't afford football tickets but I do have to play in the game.

I don't like the game, and I don't go. What I dislike even more, though, are the troglodytes who festoon their homes and cars with purple and gold, parade around in tiger face paint, wear LSU gear from head to toe, and loudly proclaim "WE'RE NUMBER ONE!" What's with all this "we" business? You weren't on the field, didn't make a single play, and were barely sober enough to stand. Pffft. Get a life.

glinda doesn't mind oafs and rubes because she knows that football (fubah) is more important than any behavior however offensive.

Well I had a great reply thought up until I read Glinda's occupation. Thank you SNL and Celebrity Jeopardy for making me lose my train of thought.

As anecdotal proof, the English in this paper could not have passed muster in my LSU first semester freshman English class but that was some years ago, so to be fair maybe the standards have changed.

BigRock, astute. Booger-eaters, indeed. Pitiful when one of the few redeeming factors is football and the provincials cling to a fantasy as their raison d'être, the fantasy that a redemption for one's failures is found in a tribal game with a ball. I suspect Neanderthal genetic vestiges.

I'm wondering if Glinda is one of the many booger-eaters who play stupidly loud music at their tailgate parties, attend the games, cover their houses in purple and gold, and have never stepped foot in a classroom at LSU.

If that is the way glinda thinks incivilities should be handled, I hope she is a physical and not mental therapist.

Love the game, just not some of the spectators. ( was going to say not enough of them are booing and cussing the ref's, just to be silly)

The reason why the Alabama band got booed is because every time the LSU band would play a tune, the Bama band would play at the same time and undercut them. This is against known etiquette for college bands.

I'm sure Mr. Martinez wasn't the only one who felt the way he did. He was expressing an opinion shared by others who were probably happy to have their opinion heard.

"If you don't like the game, don't go." Hmmm. And this does what for those who enjoy the games, spend the extraordinary amount of money to obtain tickets, and still expect civility among all attending?

Ignoring misbehavior is not the way to correct it, glinda.
