Letter: America the free has not been lost!

We have had our election! Almost two years of campaigning and constant bickering.

America the free has lost!

Many of us came up with a sickening feeling on Wednesday morning, but is this the end of a “free people”?

Throughout history, there have been times when the “end” was in sight. Yet somehow, the descendents of Valley Forge have always gone on to yet another victory. Sometimes not obvious, as in the case of the Reconstruction after the Civil War. The president, Abraham Lincoln, had suspended many of what the people thought were “God-given” rights!

Indeed, there were many years when people in the South struggled to survive the aftermath, and it would have been hard to believe that this split nation would ever mend to the point where the people would unite and go to war against a European tyrant such as Hitler. But we did.

We have taken a wake-up call from religious fanatics in the case of 9/11, and for a few months we were stunned and shaken that such hatred could exist against ordinary working Americans. We paused and went back to work to bring back to normal the nation we had known.

Apparently that worked also. We are still the No. 1 nation for immigration worldwide.

True, many of the “immigrants” seem more like invaders, but still they come! And that proves that America is still the “Golden Door” for the world’s people “yearning to breathe free” — fiscal cliff and all.

Every American citizen has a share in the national debt of over $100,000 now and still the borders overflow. We must have something going for us.

I guess we’ll just have to take a clue from the Saints fans who, like Moses, had to spend some 40 years, wandering in the desert.

I doubt anyone is arguing about the imperative of the war in Afghanistan and the necessity of taking out al quaida although somehow the argument has been perverted into a "liberal" "Obama supporter" straw man. What was stupid or Being Stupid as the case may be was concurrent tax cuts while attempting to fight two wars and willfully neglecting to properly fund those wars; in addition to unconscionable and incompetent undermanning and planning which got a lot of Americans killed and maimed unnecessarily. General Shinseki was removed for protesting Bush and Dumbsfelds tragedy of errors. Presumably one objective was to take bin laden out which may be a measure of competence and resolve. Reality always seems to triumph over fantasy as a final outcome but evidently fantasy gives some reason to live. Regardless, placing American soldiers in harm's way without proper planning and support is criminal, stupidity is no excuse.

Yet we invaded Iraq instead... Thanks, W.

On September 11, 2001 there was a terrorist attack on this country. Approximately 3000 people were killed. Many were trapped in two sky scrapers located in New York City called the World Trade Center after the buildings were hit by airplanes. Another plane hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C. A forth plane landed in an open field. Lot of Americans died that day. In case some of you liberals and Obama Supporters forgot why we went to war in Afghanistan, that was the reason.

911 was Bush's fault. He hired the Taliban to crash those airplanes into the trade center. Also Iraq War, Bush's fault too. He called up Saddam Hussein on the telephone and told him to defy the U.N. Resolution and not allow inspectors into his country to search for chemical weapons which he had used in the past to kill innocent women and children in neighboring countries. It is okay for tyrants to have nuclear and chemical weapons of mass destruction, it was none of Bush's business nor the U.N. whether Saddam Hussein had chemical weapons of mass destruction. Both those wars were Bush's Fault. The debt is also Bush's fault too, had nothing to do with the Democrats or Black Caucus in Congress mandating that banks give out worthless loans to people who could not afford houses via the Community Reinvestment Act and that those loans would be guaranteed by the Federal Government when those people could not pay them back. The realestate bubble burst of 2008 was all Bush's Fault. Blame Bush.

Our debt is due to being bogged down in two wars for a decade and the ridiculous Bush era tax cuts. Then, during Obama's first term, the Tea Bagger Republicans in the House and Senate stated that they would do nothing to help Obama and the Dems and that their single goal was to make sure Obama was a one-term President. Well, they didn't help to reduce the debt or deficit, they blocked every proposal by the President and Dems, and then failed in their task to make Obama a one-term President. All of the exit polls, and even polls after the election indicate that the majority of people believe that Bush and the Republicans are the reason for the mess we are in. That is reassuring that most people don't listen to the nonsense spewed forth by Fox News, Karl Rove, the Koch brothers, and other far-right loonies.

Whatchange, that's what he was saying? Then....why didn't he just say so? What you wrote was much more coherent.

The whole point of this letter is to say that we will be just fine over the next 4 years. So many people are screaming we are doomed, we will lose our freedom, everything we have come to know will be gone, all because President Obama was re-elected, this letter just goes to say, Hey, we have faced a lot in the past and came out on top, so we will be just fine, and at the end of 4 years, we will still be a free nation and hopefully a better one. That is all this letter is saying. The message was apparently lost on the shallow minded and the democrats. @ ex-louisianian; I have come to notice you find racism in everything.

Democrat Party = Racist Party

This editorial is yet another example of a Confederate revisionist wrapping himself in the Stars-and-Stripes of phony patriotism. But I think the best line is this one: "... we were stunned and shaken that such hatred could exist against ordinary working Americans." Someone who had exposure to media generated outside of the right-wing noise factory can tell you myriad reasons why the US is at best resented among the rest of the planet. One guess -- it's not out of envy for our "freedom."

I think America, land of the free has become America, land of the free stuff. That's one reason we have a $16 trillion national debt.

Things are going to get real bad starting in January. That Happy Meal at McDonald's will now cost you about $8.00. Tank of Gas, about 6 bucks. Unemployment will hit 20%. Going out to eat for lunch, about $20.00.

I had my sickening feeling on Tuesday Evening when FOX News announced that Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida was too close to call.

Wow. Quite a lot of confusing metaphors and random historical references. I think I speak for everyone when I say, "Heh?" Anyone know what this guy is talking about? I can't tell if he's praising America or bashing it. Borders "overflow"? I guess someone didn't get the memo that illegal immigration, under President Obama, is now at net zero. This was a great letter....if you also like to sniff glue. Happy Wednesday, everyone!

One might imagine from his slavish comments that dday198 is up the boss man a little higher than his heel.

we survived (barely) the first 4 years of the far left administration of pres. obama, we'll survive the next 4 also. hopefully there will be enough left over for his successor to bring the U.S. back to it's no. 1 position. i know i'm a current day attila the hun, but we have to stop paying for those who do not want to work. they have the right to not work, but i should have the right to not support them.

@unevahno - before your get all sanctimonious on us in the future, you ought to check the left leaning closet of history you are in. You will find many more "skeltons" in it!!

I theorize that right wing media has coalesced the latent racists of America. However I know that 55% of Louisiana's whites voted for the Grand Dragon of the KKK for Governor. No doubt what the problem is here.

America the free has not been lost. America the free has lost. Which is it? Maybe just the writer of the letter is lost.
