Our Views: Remembering our veterans

In the recently concluded presidential campaign, neither of the two major candidates was a military veteran — a development that would have been considered unusual a generation ago.

But the creation of an all-volunteer military has meant that military service is no longer something broadly experienced in America. That change means fewer of us have firsthand knowledge of the sacrifices required by serving in the military.

Given that reality, today’s observance of the Veterans Day might not resonate as deeply as it should across America. But Americans need to remember the hardships endured by veterans so that the United States can remain strong.

Those sacrifices are much too easy to forget. The ranks of World War II and Korean War vets are dwindling, and the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm are fading from popular memory, too.

America’s recent military involvement in Iraq is perhaps more present in the public mind, and the ongoing presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan is a vivid reminder of the costs of military service.

We wonder, though, how often Americans stop to think about the challenges faced by our military personnel.

Today is a day to acknowledge the contributions of our military veterans, and to thank them for their service.

God bless you 8point6. You are a true American hero...it is just a shame that vets of that era were treated as scum by the very people that make up part of the base of the Democrat party today..

politicians kill troops. our nation's military is the best in the world. they do not lose wars, they win them. then the politicians get involved and troop deaths go up, way up. even in afganistan the military went in and destroyed the taliban's ability to "wage war". then the politicians decided to stay and "rebuild" the country into a "democracy". deaths went up, way up. and the nation is now a death trap for troops with all types of political restrictions on what the troops can do and not, including when they may shoot. remember that the next time a politician says he/she supports our troops. they give a rat's behind about the troops. they do NOT want to lose their next election. they're troop killers.

It's never clear exactly what liberals think about the military,i.e., is it a toy, an experimental venue for societal change, a place for Neanderthals so that they might not be a bother to the elite, or is it a handy whipping boy any time some tears for third world despots are needed? One thing is clear, however, and that although they all say that they "support the troops", it is nothing but claptrap coming from them.

So how many Adocate editorial writers are veterans? That's what I thought - none.
