Letter: Jindal hurting state health care

I voted for Bobby Jindal three times, contributed to his campaign and was upset when he lost to Gov. Kathleen Blanco. Now, I am very disappointed in his performance and would not vote for him again.

The first omen appeared when he opposed mandating the wearing of helmets by motorcyclists. Yet, helmets increase safety and reduce costs because of injury.

He opposed a bill to maintain a tax on cigarettes, the income of which was vital to some health programs.

He is so often out of the state on fundraising ventures that he should be paid only for the days he is in Louisiana working.

Recently, Jindal unwisely rejected federal Medicaid dollars that could have helped fund mental-health programs and aided the state hospitals budget. This folly ends up with Louisianians paying taxes that go to other state Medicaid programs, while we suffer for lack of funding.

Jindal is currently making massive cuts in the state hospital system. This will be destructive not only to medical care to the poor and uninsured, but will severely and permanently damage the training of physicians in Louisiana. Predictably, there will be devastating effects on LSU and Tulane Medical Schools to educate physicians.

With a reduction in hospital beds, and training programs for primary care and specialties, there will be a decrease in the number of new doctors who will establish practices in Louisiana, as most physicians practice in locations where they are trained. Too, the reduction of beds will cause many patients to go untreated or have the cost absorbed by private hospitals. Additionally, there will be a huge loss of jobs in health care, adding to the economic woes of our state. The Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence is their only local source of jobs.

What is it about Jindal that he cannot comprehend this unfolding travesty? He appears obsessed with running for “higher office.” He apparently chooses to do or not do something depending on how it might affect his attractiveness to prominent Republicans, even though the choices hurt his people and his state.

What can be done to block what is going on in mental health care and the LSU State Hospital System? Unfortunately, we citizens have no real power other than to push for a recall or voice public opposition. He, however, has declared he does not care what his constituents think of him. State hospital administrators have been told to resign when they have opposed Jindal. LSU board members have been replaced. This is too much power.

The only hope is that the members of the state Legislature must rise up and oppose what is going on. They need to be challenged to protect us.

I was not here when Jindal was doing his previous mess, but I understand he was a turn and burn conservative throughout his political career and everyone knew it. Reminds me of the line in an old song: "You knew I was a snake before you took me in." He is doing what he said he would do. Louisiana does some stupid stuff. I thought David Duke was the worst----that one embarrassed the entire Southeast. But I don't think he could have done as much harm as Jindal has, even if he had worn his robe and hood to work and did lynchings in front of the Capitol. The legislators need to be pressed for a special session with 3 agendas 1) Stop the firings of state workers and cuts to state agencies 2) stop the destruction of the public schools and abuse of teachers 3) impeach and kick out Jindal. Don't let him finish his term. If they refuse, every one who won't cooperate should be immediately recalled.

unevaho and chem: There are more than two liberals. Jindal always talks about how he won by a landslide, but if you checked the precincts north of Goodwood after the election, he hardly got any votes in North Baton Rouge, even though the other candidates had no money for campaigns. Also, there is New Orleans. Shreveport is also amazingly open minded for North Louisiana and Monroe seems to be coming around. However, a liberal in Louisiana would be a moderate almost any place else. The problem is the Catholic and fundie churches and Satan's own PAC, Louisiana Family Forum, convincing the less informed that nothing matters except whether a candidate is anti-abortion. Hitler could be running on a pro-life platform and they would vote for him because they are told they will go to hell if they don't . The Republicans, and especially Jindal are very good at avoiding talking about the issues, answering questions, and bringing everything back around to their agenda. Watch the presidential and vice presidential debates, Paul Ryan is Jindal in Yankee clothing. It is not that they like either Pyush or Vitter. They just don't know who else is available. Vitter really needs to go, not because of his lack of morals even though I don't see how he could be into immorality and be homophobic and anti-abortion. That stupidity is his business, but for his efforts to hold back the recovery and damage America, as well as his support of Jindal.

Apparently the majority of Louisianians like Piyush and Vitter. Doesn't say much for the majority of Louisianians.

Now I know why my Grandparents would rather eat glass than vote for a republician. BJ is exposing what GOP is all about. What about all the insane tax breaks he pushed though the jelly back legislature that they can’t even keep track of ?Any Legislator that carried water for or just stuck their head in a hole and let Lil Booby do this to the state needs to be voted out of office and their businesses boycotted, maybe then they will figure out they represent the people , not Jindal.

I am really glad that a high income person is seeing the light about Jindal. It is time and past time for a special session that includes, besides stopping his destruction of the schools and health care system also discusses impeachment. The man does not care. Not all Republicans are totally intolerable, but Jindal is the worst of the worst, up there with David Vitter and Paul Ryan and that guy from Iberia Parish.

Joseph, what did you think was going to happen if Jindal was elected? He ran on his record of cutting funding for health care and higher education. Are you really suprised that, now in office, he cut funding for health care and education?!? If you mess with a bull, you'll get his horns. For future reference....please don't vote for Vitter either.

Unfortunately, you are probably correct, postscript56. Is it better to have a sleaze-ball than a czar for governor? We may learn after the next election.

spqr- Got it, and your right.

@Chucky...Piyush may run for state senator to get back to D.C. So, we may have a chance to vote against the skinny dictator.

I will not be voting for Gov. Jindal ether next election, He can not run, two terms

Bighug - good luck with future elections for governor in this state. A recent poll shows David Vitter in the lead against all potential opponents. Think things will be that different under a Gov. Vitter?

Dr. Biundo, you fail to mention the horrific damage that the governor has done to the public education system in Louisiana, by cavalierly handing our taxpayer-supported schools off to venture vultures through privatization. You fail to mention how he has demoralized credentialed, certified educators by promoting Teach for America, an organization that puts college graduates who have no degree in education into our classrooms, You fail to mention that he has launched a teacher-evaluation plan that sets dedicated teachers up for failure and that he has packed both the State Department of Education and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education with people who blindly do his bidding. You fail to mention that state employees who dare to stand up to his will are summarily dismissed from their jobs. Here's the thing: in his campaigns, Governor Jindal never made a secret of his intentions. The Advocate and local television stations provided plenty of coverage of his speeches, plus his past stances. Why weren't you (and the rest of the folks who voted for this man) paying attention?

Every liberal in Louisiana, (both of us) saw this coming. Piyush is what happens when a state lets old lawmakers decide the content of science books.

I believe the only hope is that voters will learn, as the writer did, to vote for someone else in the future, if we have a future after Jindal is finished with Louisiana. What does Jindal have against this state, anyway?
