Letter: Thank you, public servants

I was recently reminded of Don Henley’s song “Dirty Laundry” — the point of the song being that bad news is what sells. This becomes even more apparent during election season, when people find every reason to criticize our public and elected officials. However, I have seen something to the contrary worth sharing.
Like most Catholic High parents who drop off our sons every morning, I have noticed the many potholes along Claycut Road, including one particularly bad one right near the drop-off circle. This morning, however, I noticed it was patched, smooth and actually unnoticeable. I, like most others, would love to see this and many other streets completely resurfaced, but I realize the budgetary restraints that exist. I recognize there must be priorities, and therefore, it is nice to see simple things like potholes being fixed.
The many good things that city officials and the Department of Public Works staff do each day are frequently overlooked — and it is all too easy, particularly during election season, to find things to criticize about our government. This is one clear instance when our local government has served us well.
Our city and the Department of Public Works deserve thanks and credit.
