Letter: Harrell’s Ferry no real improvement

South Harrell’s Ferry Road from near Millerville Road to South Sherwood Forest Boulevard has been completed and officially opened.

South Harrell’s Ferry Road used to be a narrow, uneven road with a 40 mph speed limit and two ditches for shoulders. Now, South Harrell’s Ferry is an open road with two lanes in each direction, a left turn lane for traffic heading west toward Sherwood Forest, and a 35 mph speed limit.

When is the city going to raise the speed limit to an appropriate level such as 45 mph or more? It is practically impossible to drive 35 mph on this nice new road, which is almost as nice as an interstate. Police are ticketing people. Therefore we have a nice new speed trap.

Why was the left turn lane from Woodland Ridge to South Sherwood Forest included in the design? It seems to me unnecessary and all it did was steal property from businesses along South Harrell’s Ferry and increase construction time and cost.

Finally, while I did not attend the ridiculous formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open this road, I can’t help but wonder how many state employees got paid to attend it.

I have not even seen this road. But what often happens is a 2 lane road is upgraded to a 4 or 5 lane, and then over time more and more traffic lights are added until the traffic is actually flowing slower than it was before the road was widened. The a big contract is let out to synchronize all of those red lights. Talk about some smart growth !?
