Letters: Potential for greatness often wasted

I have a few thoughts that I would like to share concerning my precious African-American brothers. And let me begin by saying, “They were created for greatness.” Yes, they were created for greatness. In them are so many gifts, talents and abilities. What they can accomplish for good is limited only by their imaginations.

However, I am saddened because I see the potential of so many of them being wasted. Every time I read about another one of my precious brothers dying, I see the waste. Every time I hear of a mother weeping for her son who is no more, I see the waste.

My heart’s desire is that my precious brothers will arise from the world of hatred, revenge and destruction. I long that they will arise and live out the high calling to which they have been called. Yes, I can see my precious brothers arising and demonstrating the greatness that is lying dormant with them.

No one is created "for" anything. Sure, anyone can attain greatness, if given the right opportunities, motivation and incentives, but greatness has to be earned. You're not created for it. Telling someone they CAN BE great and telling them it's a shame that they're not are 2 different things. The first approach provides motivation, the other foments resentment and dissapointment. This may explain a lot of the hatred, revenge and destruction you write of....
