Letters: Night Out story questioned

I don’t think I’m the only person who read your June 22 article on nightlife near LSU (“Social Studies,” FUN section) and wondered why The Advocate is promoting alcohol consumption among young people.

Do we need to be reminded that Tigerland abounds in bars, all within easy walking distance of the campus? How convenient! The frequent mentions of the late-night “drunk bus” and of students skittering from bar to bar along darkened streets only serve to reinforce the popular image of LSU as a party school where drinking and socializing are synonymous.

This story was worthy of the LSU student paper, but certainly not of The Advocate.

If they can afford booze they can probably afford more tuition.

When I was at university, I did not with one exception binge or drink abusively. I waited until I was 21-years-old to drink wine and beer and until I was 23-years-old before I consumed distilled spirits. There are socially responsible ways to drink if you do not have the traits related to alcoholism. The industry around our universities that pray on students and foster binge drinking parasitic. Louisiana State University is too much of an international disgrace to celebrate the culture of abuse at which out students and our community excel. .
