Letter: BREC needs recycling

Why doesn’t BREC have a recycling program? Tons of recyclable material is sent to the landfill instead of collected to be recycled. BREC officials have been telling me for years that there is a program in the works. It hasn’t happened. Why can’t normal containers be supplied at BREC sites and picked up just like the neighborhood programs that work so incredibly well? I am tired of seeing this waste!

P.S. I love to read The Advocate every morning; it is as important to me as my morning coffee. Keep up the good work.

Why should BREC be responsible for recycling, shouldn't that be the responsibility of the city parish. The city parish needs to set up recycling points throughout the parish and not some silly little 2x3 box they give you with the trash can. @Elderly Man, my wife and I love Bluebonnet Swamp, we go there all the time just to walk the trails, the main trail leads right to the library.

BREC is not as rich as we suppose but it is a good agency. The Bluebonnet Swamp Park is a model environmental project but gumbo33 seems to know what he claims. Recycling might be something we might help do as volunteers.

In all fairness, BREC has seen its budget cut just like everyone else's and, absurdly, you have to pay to recycle. Still...you're absolutely right. There should be recycling containers in ALL public spaces.

BREC won't get off it's rear to do anything without an act of God...Seriously. It took me 4 months and several letters to my district rep to have more garbage receptacles put up in our neighborhood park (the two they had would constantly overflow on weekends) and have obscene graffiti removed from near a playground area. Their response has been deplorable at best and mostly non-existant to many of the "smaller" issues I've had with them. Most of the employees I've come into contact with are petty and overly-sensitive with barely the desire to collect their checks and get their guaranteed promotions and raises should they be mildly intelligent enough. However, I will say they do a great job hiring other talented and hardworking people to build signature parks with our money and then stealing the credit for these achievements. Same goes for the many volunteers who spend years trying to create and push for access to the many conservation areas that BREC stockpiles (again with taxpayer funding). BREC just steps in after the work is done and says, "were in charge now so your done here" and takes all the credit, even though they will fight you tooth and nail during the process. BREC at it's best is an insult of a quasi-government institution that has seen it's best day come to pass.
