Letters: Why was ex-governor cheered?

About the photo, “Lawmakers cheer former governor,” I would like to know a few things.

Why did our legislators cheer for this felonious ex-con? Do all of our legislators aspire to be like Edwin Edwards? Why did they line up for pictures with a former criminal? Why are they willing to publicly associate with a known felon? Why was Edwards allowed to visit in the first place? Why did security not stop and escort this felon off the premises? Why is there no law in place to keep felons and ex-convicts out of the legislative chamber?

And last, why does The Advocate continue to cover everything this loser does?

Remember too, this is a state that elects and re-elects that slimy, immoral, crooked David Vitter. At least Edwards cared about something more than what goes in his pants and abusing gay people.

Apparently Edwards did a lot of good for Louisiana. He would do a lot of good again if they would go on and pardon him and would certainly be a better governor than that sneaky, mean control freak, Jindal. Plus he has a great personality. Since people know he is a crook, he would been careful not to do anything that could send him back to prison. So he would be incorruptible. You could bet there would not be all these people losign their state jobs and the schools would not be drawn and quartered so for-profits and the Catholic Church could make money off of them. He could have beat Bobby Jindal in the last election. That is probably why the Republicans made sure he would not get pardoned in time.

1991 Duke vs. Edwards...thank goodness Edwards won - yes Edwards was found guilty on 17 of 26 counts, however he claimed "I did not do anything wrong as a governor, even if you accept the verdict as it is, it doesn't indicate that," and it has NEVER been proven otherwise. He has served his time. Does that mean we disrespect him? Does that mean we can't appreciate the GOOD things that he did do for the state. Truth been known - Edwards NEVER hid who he was - Every KNEW exactly what we were getting. Can NOT say the same for the current administration. Thats why I would PROUDLY shake our former Governor's hand and take a picture with him.

Well, let us down often.

DMJ, I took think that the former governor does love Louisiana even if he sometimes let us down.

In all seriousness, I think the answer to this letter's question is that while Edwards broke the law and had very poor ethics at times, Louisiana is better as a result of his efforts. Whether or not this is true....who knows? It's impossible to make a point based on a hypothetical alternate reality. I've always thought of Edwards as someone who loved Louisiana and its citizens. I've also always thought of him as someone who screwed up...big time.

This is Louisiana, Clay. We also elected David Vitter. Go figure...

I'm not bitter and I am far from envious and I find it amazing how some people worship this man. He never did anything for this state that didn't benefit his back pocket and those of his friends. He was a pro at giving those state raises at election time.

Clay, I have often wondered the same thing. I guess it's the same way people look up to brain dead celebrities for inspiration.

Good letter and good point. And those not understanding it are part of our decline as a nation.

Gee, folks, the former governor is NOT an impressive man regardless his reputation. He is a convicted felon who stole from his state. He is not worthy of admiration. He is charming. But then so is Bill Clinton.

A little envy Clay? I bet you believe in the U.S. Consitution and that of the state of Louisiana. Edwin did his time and followed all the rules and sentences laid on him. By the way, Edwin is not a loser - you ever seen him with less that a dime female?

Amen.
