Letters: What happened to nation’s values?

Gotta love the liberal press. President Barack Obama comes out in support of immoral gay marriages and they quickly condemn Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as being “backward on equality.”

What has happened to the godly/biblical values this country was built upon?

The problem with this country and its current downward spiral is that our leaders seemingly lack godly values, and they simply have no backbone to stand up for what they believe in.

Obama, who represents the Democratic Party, has provided all of America with a strong case as to why you shouldn’t vote for any Democrat anywhere as Democrats are out of step with American values.

It is time to stand up and say enough is enough.

CaptainHaddock: "I dont care if a politician sleeps with each and every intern he ever hired." So! You support removing the sexual harassment laws passed to punish bosses who abuse their power to coerce sexual favors from their "underlings" or do you just want to make an exception for politicians?

@Tea_Slayer, I can only hope so. And he asked and I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

I dont care if a politician sleeps with each and every intern he ever hired. But, if he chooses to talk the talk, as Vitter did (and as the party of Jesus tend to), then he needs to walk that walk - right back to the private sector. We all know CLinton and Kennedy did it too (although not with prostitutes). But they were already forsaken sinners werent they? Being democrats and all. Jesus himself chose Vitter to run (as he chose all Republicans). Surely the GOP keeps itself to a higher standard. Its the party of Newt after all.

He's a republican so he gets a pass from republicans. Democrats are often more inclined to 'forgive' their own as well. The issue isnt his fondness for prostitutes, his infidelity, his contrite sorrow (that he was caught), his finding religion and asking for humble forgiveness(only after being caught) and so on. Its his self righteousness - his godly demeanor (demanding that others caught in similar infidelity resign in shame, while ignoring his own moral sewer, and clinging to his job of public trust when he himself was caught). Its that laughable hypocrisy that grates. He is from the GOP - the party of jesus and family values! I dont care if he likes prostitutes. But then I dont walk around preaching family values and condemning others for their unchristian manner and demanding they resign. He did. The fact that his own ludicrous actions stimulate (selective) defense indicates that for a good many people, their god comes a distant second to their party - Vitter included.

Whatnow, are you gullible enough to believe that Vitter actually "asked for forgiveness" and meant it?

6) Comment by Whatnow - 18/05/2012

@Elderly Man, are you without sin? Keep throwing those stones at people who have asked for forgiveness.

When one lives is a state represented by the filthy Senator David Vitter, talk about morality has a certain pungency.

DMJ, amen, again.

The "ultra-liberal left"?! Another false equivolence argument? Geez... This is why Democrats are so bad at politics. They make concessions for the sake of argument and the right never does. There is no left wing anymore. Barney Frank and Bernie Sanders are retiring; meanwhile, Dick Lugar just lost his primary to some yahoo who's bragging about how he's not going to compromise. There's a right wing party, the Republicans, and a centrist party, the Democrats. If only we DID have a left wing. If only...

What happened to the nation's values? They are progressing with the times, simply put. Women are no longer property, blacks and whites can drink out of the same water fountain, and gay people are no longer considered to be mentally ill. However, your assertion that the leaders are out of touch is spot-on. Republicans are beholden to the radical right, and Democrats are slaves of the ultra-liberal left. If either side gets their way 100% of the time, approximately half of the country will be alienated.

Let me break something to you, Chris. The fundamental values of our nation are freedom and equal rights for ALL. Not equal rights for only white Christian heterosexual men and women. ALL! Black, gay, Hindu, trans-sexual, punk-rocker, immigrant, whatever. I would argue that NOTHING has happened to our so-called values. Stop living in the past when we only pretended to recognize the rights of all of our citizens. Live in the now when we're finally starting to walk the walk!

Senator David supports change. He likes change, I think.

Gee... a guy from Denham Springs opposed to equal rights for gay people. I'm shocked!! Kidding aside, this is a good news/bad news situation. The bad news is....people like Chris Harlan still exist. The good news is....when people like this are upset, it means we're on the right track. Progressives always win when it comes to social issues...eventually. We always do. And the Chris Harlans of the world end up looking backwards, foolish, hateful and just plain wrong. Perhaps Mr. Harlan should get out of Livingston Parish for a while. If he did, he might realize that most Americans support either gay marriage or civil unions for gay people. Ironically, it's this yahoo who is out of touch with American values. Welcome to the year 2012, bub!

I wonder if the writer of this letter would stand up and say that Senator David Vitter (adultery that directly and negatively affects a family) is out of step with the writer's definition of American values?

15) Comment by Whatnow - 17/05/2012

@Tea_Slayer, yeah, but, the point is, you have to mean it. Got it?

"What has happened to the godly/biblical values this country was built upon?" Yeah, what did happen to slavery?" As also happened in many other parts of the world(and in our case with a great loss of life), eventually we found a way to remove this flaw which the founders realized existed in the beginning. As the saying goes: "Politics is the art of the possible." Actually the world has yet to completely rid itself of the institution of human slavery. How often do you hear anyone trying to do anything about the slavery which still exists on the African continent.

17) Comment by Tea_Slayer - 17/05/2012

when you point out the hypocrisy of "christians" they resort to the false argument that anyone who is not (their brand of ) religious is somehow amoral. You see, with god, you can commit any amoral act you want, as long as you apologize later.

Progressives always fault the conservatives for being so far behind in today's world. But, they always bring up the past to try to win an argument. Not that we've learned from past mistakes, just that they were made. Progressives want us to live in a world with no conscience for our actions. You see, without God, there is no sin, no guilt and no consequences for our actions. Everyone can just be. Ah, la la land.....

We live in a society that celebrates raw greed over community and mutuality. That is a profound loss. President George Washington was perhaps the richest man in America but he was also ready at a moment to share for the good of all.

“Values” is an antique term that emerged within economics where it did not work. Somehow this useless notion attached itself to other domains where it does not work any better than it did in economics.
