@spqr -- Another competing daily newspaper is not likely, unfortunately. Newspapers are losing money all over the country. They are terrible investments. The circulation is steadily declining for The Advocate, along with its ad revenues. It is a dying quail. As the dough dries up, so does its ability to hire quality people, which thereafter allows journalistic integrity to swirl down the tubes. Apparently, this includes the ability to SPELL. When I got my Journalism degree from LSU, I recall vividly that--if you handed in ANY story or ANY exam containing ANY misspelled word--the professor would stop reading, circle the word, write an F on your paper and hand it back. In the years before spellcheck, we lived in FEAR of misspelling ANY word and checked our stuff religiously. I feel sorry for the troops at this paper trying to hold it all together with the so-obviously-below-average staff they are able to get with the diminishing dollars available...

Two things: a similar story ran yesterday. And last week a political cartoon had Piyush Jindal making fun of public schools. And then I look at another shoddy Advocate headline. We need another newspaper in this town.

In 1959, Vince Lombardi stood before a dispirited Green Bay Packer squad, who had finished 1-10 in '58, despite having 5 future Hall of Famers on the team. As the new coach, he promised them his coaching style would emphasize the basics. He produced a pigskin from behind his back and held it aloft before the silent team. "Gentlemen," he began..."THIS is a football." I am betting Vince could spell the word FOOTBALL...unlike the person writing this headline for a story on our Tigers. Sheesh...how does an editor allow a headline to be published on the subject of LSU Tiger football ... and MISSPELL FOOTBALL?!
