Victim’s mother in critical condition
A 34-year-old Destrehan man accused of stabbing his live-in girlfriend to death was arrested Thursday evening in Independence, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities said Bruce Bourgeois Jr., 34, stabbed Mia Waite, 34, Wednesday morning inside their home at 318 Madewood Drive in Destrehan. Bourgeois was arrested in Independence in Tangipahoa Parish. He will be transported to the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona, where he will be booked on counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities said Mia Waite’s mother, Carmelina Waite, also was stabbed when she arrived at the home Wednesday after Bourgeois called her for a ride to his probation officer, claiming that Mia Waite was sick and could not take him.
When she arrived, Bourgeois would not allow Carmelina Waite to see her daughter, and she was stabbed in the neck during a struggle with the suspect, the Sheriff’s Office said. She was able to escape to a neighbor’s home. She was not able to speak but wrote on a sheet of paper that Bourgeois had stabbed her.
She was in critical condition after the confrontation. The St. Charles Herald-Guide reported her throat was slashed.
The newspaper reported that Mia Waite was preparing to graduate from beauty school this week.
Bourgeois is on parole until Oct. 9, 2016, for felony theft and distribution of a false controlled substance.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Chris Baird at (985) 783-6807 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
