John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. Robert Kaltenbaugh, 52, died Saturday evening at University Hospital where he has been in critical condition since the July 10 incident, Fortunato said. Kaltenbaugh was shot in the chest with the crossbow by Edward Brown, 59, in a dispute that started after Kaltenbaugh went to Brown’s apartment to retrieve some personal belongings of Brown’s ex-girlfriend, Fortunato said. The two men began arguing, and Brown told investigators he repeatedly ordered Kaltenbaugh to leave his apartment, but he refused. Brown told investigators Kaltenbaugh continued to act aggressively toward him, Fortunato said, at which point he took out his crossbow and shot an arrow into Kaltenbaugh’s stomach. The men attended drug addiction meetings together in the past and knew each other for approximately 4 years, according to Fortunato. The incident is under review by the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office, and Fortunato said a supplemental report regarding Kaltenbaugh’s death will be provided.
