The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 38-year-old Harvey man whose body was found lying in a pool of blood on his bed Sunday morning, spokesman Col. John N Fortunato said.
Fortunato said that officers found Rene O’Quin dead in his apartment in the 2800 block of Destrehan Avenue after receiving a call at 10:22 a.m. from a woman who identified herself as his fiancée.
Investigators initially believed the victim may have sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound but later determined he was shot by someone else, Fortunato said.
Antoine O’Quin, the victim’s brother, said Rene O’Quin was killed when a neighbor accidentally discharged a weapon that went through the wall and entered his apartment. Antoine O’Quin said his brother was in bed with his fiancée at the the time.
“He was playing with the gun and it just went off,” O’Quin said.
He added that there had been a dispute between the neighbor and his girlfriend the night before and that police had been called to the scene, but no one was arrested.
Fortunato said he could not confirm that deputies had been to the neighbor’s apartment, but said that homicide detectives are interviewing an unnamed individual who lives in the same apartment complex.
Anyone with information in this matter is asked to call deputies at (504) 364-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
